Cloyne Literary and Historical Society

Founded initially in 1976 with the intention of publishing a book on the history of the parish of Cloyne, the Society has continued and developed since that time. The book on the history of the parish was published in 1977. The objective of the Society is to foster history, lore, legend and literature. For many years the Society ran an annual Berkeley week-end with guest speakers. The Society organises monthly talks at a local venue and field trips in the summer. It has a long standing, interactive association with the local community which has given strong support to its activities over the years. The range of interests of the Society is ever expanding and new members are always welcome.

It links in with the Whitgate/Aghada Historical Society and participates in the annual event in City Hall on celebrating Cork?s past.

Membership of the Society can vary from year to year and currently stands at about 40.

Publications include, The book of Cloyne, 1977; The Pipe Roll of Cloyne, 1996; The Gravestones of Cloyne Cathedral, 1999; Cave Meadow, Essay and Poem, 1997; The Inscriptions of the Gravestones of St. John the Baptist Church, Midleton, 2009.

Heritage Week - August 18^th to 26^th

Saturday, August 18^th - In cooperation with the Friends of Cloyne Cathedral and Cloyne & District Community Council, we have arranged guided tour of Cloyne Cathedral, which will be conducted by Patricia Lyons starting at 2.30. After the tour, there will be traditional music provided by Michael Greaney and friends, in the cathedral, until 5.30, when the musicians will move to Harty?s. There will also be an art exhibition in the cathedral by the Old Road Painters group.

Sunday, August 26th - A guided tour of Cloyne Cathedral led by Patricia Lyons (2.30 ? 4.30 pm).

Tuesday, September 11^th ? Nena Creenan will give a talk on

?The History of Ballinacurra Port?

Tuesday, September 18^th -Book club meeting at 8.00 p.m., hosted by Helen Duggan.

The book to be discussed is ?

?The Stranger?s Child? by Alan Hollingurst.

Friday, September 28^th ? Annual ?Celebration of Cork Past? ? an exhibition of Cork Local History Societies in City Hall, Cork from 10.00 am to 7.00 pm.

An opportunity to meet old friends and new and to get ideas from other societies. Come along and spend a while at our own exhibit.

Tuesday, October 16^th ? Richard Forrest will give a talk entitled

?What?s in a Name? - Personal Naming Patterns in Ireland?

He will look at various features, trends and peculiarities in Irish naming customs over the centuries.

Bill Power will give an illustrated talk based on his recent book
