  • Hi

    thank you for your message.

have you tried checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) https://familysearch.org/        for information regarding their relatives?

Do you know what religion they followed?

Most Catholic records are held locally - One site which might be of use is - http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/ - where you can ?browse? an overview of available records per county. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for possible assistance.

Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870-are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.  The Anglican Record Project is has created an index to their records: http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/bunclodyunionindex.pdf

If you haven't already - you might try any of the following:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

    Irish Newspaper Archives: http://www.irishnewsarchive.com/

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks for your reply.  Sorry it is so long before I am replying.

I have tried all the websites you mention in your email.  I have also tried IFHF, but after spending sooo much money for records, I was not finding the people in my family - only records of no use to me. Now the IFHF even charges to look at a general listing, and my pockets aren't that deep.

I found them in Griffiths, but Griffiths only shows the land occupier - not the family.  I have looked at the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses, but that is so long after my great grandfather and his sisters left for the US that I did not find anything to tie the listed peoplle to my family.  They were all born before the civil records began.  By the time of the 1901 and 1911 censuses, there were no longer Gauls in Ballynaboley.

The general area of Co Kilkenny from which they came had so many Gauls - some of whom may be related.  In the past I even sent letters to people named Gaul(e) who currently live in the general area - and even sent pictures of my great grandfather when he was young.  Nothing has come of that.

Around 2002 I paid the Rothe House to obtain info on the family (before many online databases existed).  That is how I got the basic info that I included in my original posting to Ireland XO.  I have found much info online since, but nothing that I could use to identify Gaul family members.

I really appreciate your help.  It has been a long journey.
