Hi,

I hope I'm in the right parish---Castlebar---as it is listed as the Poor Law District for our ancestors, the KERRIGANS, in the 1901 census.

Micahel Kerrigan was the head of the household---born about 1851 in County Mayo.

His wife's name is Catherine, but we have no maiden name. She was born about 1856 also in County Mayo.

There were 6 children.  They were residents of "a house 6" in Derreennascooba, Tawnynagry.

Now, we are attempting to find Catherine's last name, siblings, and any of her presecessors.  We're searching for Michael Kerrigan's parents, siblings and all previous generations too.

They were listed as farmers.  Is there any way to tell if that farm still exists?---or where it was?

Thank  you in advance for your time and assistance.

Mike

  • If you check the Familysearch site, there are civil birth registrations of children born to Michael Kerrigan and Catherine O’Brien. They lived in Derreennascooba. Michael and Kate were married in Burriscarra RC Parish in 1868. You might need a copy civil marriage certificate for their fathers’ names. Griffith’s Valuation of the mid 1850’s lists a Patrick O’Brien as living in Derreennascooba, possibly Kate’s father. The townland is situated in Ballintober Civil Parish but Burriscarra RC Parish. If you delve further don’t be surprised if they were baptised before their civil birth date. Registration cost money so many postponed the event. I am not familar with the area but hope this might assist.Good LuckPete

  • Hi Pete,

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to help us out.

Please forgive this basic question.  When you say the Familysearch site, are you talking about the Latter Day Saints'  www.familysearch.org website?  I fiddled with it a bit and got a "Server" problem.  I'm guessing I did something wrong,

    Thanks for your patience.

    Mike

Yes www.familysearch.org is correct, it seems to be having intermittent problems. That was my first post so am on a learning curve around this site. The specific collection is at https://familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http://familysearch…             there is nothing after 1881 and the coverage is patchy.

There are children, John in 1869, Margaret 1872, Patrick 1874 and Thomas in 1876. Have just noticed your previous re. being connected to Ellen born 1897. If you want a site that gives hints, as in parents initials, try  http://www.mayoancestors.com/default.aspx?DepartmentID=1&DepartmentInde… You would need to enter a year and it responds with a few years either side So if you try Ellen Kerrigan 1897 you would find a likely birth registration in 1895 and a baptism in 1894. My family were similarly erroneous, the children themselves had no idea of their actual age.

The church records are listed at http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseact…

There are commercial sites for Irish records but if you intend to go that route it might be better to obtain a photocopy of the original from the General Register Office instead of a commercial transcription. http://www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm   Search and photocopy of entry in the Register 6 euros.

Just had another look. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FBFC-9TB has the birth registration of an Ellen Kerrigan in June quarter (April/May/June) 1895 in Castlebar registration district. Unless you are familiar with the Irish registration system it might be be best to avoid that collection but I think she will be your Ellen.

It's late here so hope there are not too many mistakes in this.
