My ancestor Bridget Costine was apparently the daughter of Richard Costine (c. 1794-1849) and Julia Hanrahan of Ballingarrane in the civil parish of Cloyne and county of Cork. If so, she was born in 1827.

She emigrated to the US in 1852 and married John Keily (who was also apparently from the Cloyne / Kilmahon area) in Providence, Rhode Island, USA in 1853. They settled in Elizabeth, New Jersey and had children Johanna, Julia, John, Elizabeth (my ancestor), Frances, Dennis and Richard.

I am trying to confirm my Bridget's connection to Richard and Julia and to find out more about my ancestral Costine and Hanrahan families.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

  • My ancestors were the Walsh family of Ballingarrane. I see your Costine family name along with the Walsh family in censuses and baptismal records.

    My 2nd g-grandfather, Patrick Walsh (son of James Walsh & Margaret Doyle) emigrated to St. Louis, Missouri with his brother Maurice (no proof that they came together but they ended up buried in the same family cemetery plot in St. Louis).

    Two of Patrick's siblings had Costines as baptismal sponsors (with the expected spelling variations). For Margaret Walsh, Jean Custeen, and for Catherine Walsh, Elizabeth Custien.

    How interesting that our ancestors must have certainly known each other, and here we are with the internet, and the ability to know each other far away from Ballingarrane!

  • I also have a Margaret WALSH, a 4th great grandmother, in my family tree on my maternal side.  Intimidating to find the WALSH surname as it is so common in Ireland.  Mine was married to a William SLOANE in Cloyne, Cork, Ireland on 19 February 1822.  Their son, John, married an Elizabeth COSTINE on 11 February 1845 and had six children.

     

    What is the proximity of Ballingarrane to Ballycotton?

    Would anyone assist in pointing me in the right direction for further information about Elizabeth COSTINE and her origins?
