I am descended from the Gorricks who lived the Townland of Newtown and emigrated to England.
I visited this year but could not find the name in current existence, nor could I find any burial record or gravestone

Hi.
Our volunteer has come back to us with the following response:
" I made a good few enquiries about the Gorick Family in Killtevan but I had no success.
Griffith's Valuation of 1857 shows Mathew Gorrick living in Newtown, Killtevan also John Gorrick Living in Clooncraff, Killtevan." I hope that this information is helpful. Griffith's Valuation is a property survey that was carried out in Ireland between 1848-1864. If you would like to search it yourself, you can do so here:http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ Perhaps you could also try contacting the Roscommon Heritage and Genealogical Centre for further assistance. However, a fee may apply. Here are their contact details: Heritage and Genealogical Centre,Church Street,Strokestown,Co. Hello Peter,
I realise it is a good many years since you posted your original message, which I have only just found, but just in case you are still out there....
I am descended from one of the Gorrick / Garrick families in Roscommon. My family are from Gaily, just outside Kockcroghery. The two versions of the name Garrick / Gorrick seem to be used interchangeably in the 19th century, mine are referred to under both versions in different records.
I spent some time looking into Garrick families in the area back in the 2000s to work out who was who, and did come across this couple Mathew Gorrick & Bridget Curly, in Kilteevan parish, but could not pin down a location for them. In Roscommon/Kilteevan I found 4 families in total; yours; another Mathew Gorrick of Newtown townland who married Honor Ratican in 1835 (and stayed there until he died in 1873); John Garrick of Clooncraff, who married Mary Killian in 1823, and John Garrick of Roscommon town (he ran a pub there) who married Mary Hanly in 1837.
I could not find an exact location for your family, and it seemed obvious that they must have emigrated, as there was no sign of them at the time of Griffiths's Valuation in the 1850s. I did find some possible references to them in Dewbsury in the 1850s but did not pursue it further.
I am not sure I can give you much more info on your family, but I am happy to share what I have in more detail if that would help.

Hi Andrew
Thanks for reaching out.
The Gorricks in Dewsbury are my direct family and I traced them from Matthew and Bridget up to the turn of the century. Matthew died in 1849. Surprisingly the name has died out as many of the women did not marry, I guess this was a legacy of WW1 as there were fewer men to marry. The male side married late in their lives and did not have any children.
The male names were almost always Matthew, Thomas and John, who was my Great Grandad and was born in 1858 and died in1906. I tend his grave regularily.
If you have more details on that line, especially Bridget (or Brigid) Curly I would be very grateful to receive them.
It may be easier to e-mail me directly to peterbennett88@hotmail.com
Regards
Peter
