I am looking for Thomas and Catherine Fury from Galway. I don't know where in Galway they came from but Catherine came to the USA with 2 children sometime around 1850, they settled in Nyack, Rockland County, NY. The 2 children were Michael and Sarah. We think there was another child who died, probably during the famine. Michael also died and we believe due to the famine. I do not know Catherine's maiden name but Michael was born in 1844 and Sarah was born in 1847. Using those birth dates I would think Thomas and Catherine were married sometime around 1843 or 1841, if the child who died was the first born, I don't know. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

G'day
I just spotted your post.
I've been doing a bit of fossiking myself on the Fureys (my mum was a Furey)., although I note you dropped the 'e'. The Fureys were/are Travellers ( i just found a second cousin), and Galway seems to be the favoured county and the town of Loughrea in particular.
I have got back to Michael Furey/Honoria (aka Norah) Cafferty. Norah's dates are 1832-1895 and i imagine Michael's would be similar but I'm still checking. (Keep in mind that Travellers' daughters married relatively early so there could well be an age gap of > a couple of years).
Michael and Norah had seven children, but not a Thomas, I think that your Catherine was the same generation as Michael and Norah. Michael's son, William, was my great grandfather and he had a Thomas. Now although 'Thomas' was a popular name, it is also possible that this Thomas was named for an uncle of William's and therefore a brother to his father Michael.
Warm regards and a happy new year

Hello and thank you for your note. All of the records I have been able to find for my Fury's, and there are not many, spell the name without the e, of course that is not important, there are many different ways of spelling names. Today the Fury's who are decended from Catherine spell the name Furey!!! I hope to get to Salt Lake City, Utah this spring where there is a very large genealogy library. They have a lot of records from Ireland. If I do get out there I will try to find some information using the town name you have given me.
I remember hearing about the "Travelers" when I was a very little chid. I don't remember what I was told but perhaps I was told some of my ancestors were Travelers. It's just a whisp of a memory.
Thank you for posting and if you should learn any more please contact me. I am trying to get a death certificate for Catherine, hoping to learn more about where she came from and anything at all about Thomas. Of course, if I learn anything I will share the information with you so we can see if we are tracing the same family.
Happy New Year to you and yours.

G'day MTodd
Forgive me I couldn't work out your first name. I also assume you're somewhere in the US?
Can I confirm that you do know that the LDS has a very impressive web site with a loy of free info on it? I've been to SLC and liked it it, but if you're only going for the data, maybe check out their site first.
I'm trying to unearth info on Michael and Norah, but beyond 1830's it'll prove challenging plus of course British Ireland didn't put the same sort of focus on census and record keeping as it did in what is today's the UK. still I might dig up something on their other children.
Keep me posted please.

Hello John,
My first name is Mary, sorry for the confusion and yes, I'm in Florida, USA. I am familiar with the LDS website and use it frequently. I've gone to Salt Lake City 4 times, this will be my 5th visit. The people there are very helpful and I usually learn a lot from them while I'm out there. Last year one of the volunteers took a map and located the exact spot where my grandfather lived in Leitrim, Ireland. Now if I get to Ireland I can go to exactly where he lived!! There is a group from the area where I live that goes to SLC every year to do research and I go with them. We have a week of research and one night we have a dinner and a speaker. It's a very nice way to get away for a week.
I know it is difficult to find anything beyond 1830 but who knows, maybe someone will see the posts and know the family we are talking about. That would be wonderful. Last year one of the volunteers in SLC told me people in Ireland advertise in various newspapers trying to locate family members who left Ireland, soemthing to do with land not being able to be transfered until all family members have been found. I don't remember exactly what she told me but she said I should find the Irish newspapers here in the USA to see if anyone is looking for any of my family who left Ireland. I will have to see if I can get more information on that when I go back in April. Of course I will keep you informed if I learn anything. Good talking to you.

G'day Mary
LIke I mentioned previously your Catherine is the same generation as my Michael/Honoria. I think their eldest was also a Michael recorded birth 1845, although that'd make his mother only 14 (ish).
The Galway connection makes it a possibility that they were related. Loughrea seems to be a bit of centre for Fureys, (although William their son was born in Kilcreedt, Galway) and if you find that Loughrea does comes into the mix then I reckon the chances are good.
Good hunting in SLC.

G'day Teresa
Sorry for my tardiness-just back from a few days holiday.
It would be good if we are connected. Can you send me some of the info you might know about your great uncles/grandparents and i'll do a cross check at my end?
Fingers crossed
