Forbes Family, County Sligo

Was working on this some more today.  Since I first wrote this post, I confirmed that my 3rd great grandparents, James Forbes & Mary Gallagher had another family that came to Canada with them and then moved to the Cincinnati, Ohio area (including across the river in northern Kentucky) in the U.S.  They were Miles Forbes (my great-great grandfather's name also) and his wife Honora Gallagher.  I don't know that Honora and my 3rd great grandmoter were related, although my guess is they were). 

I've worked on finding the connection to this other Forbes family since they showed being in Canada and they settled here, plus some of the sons had the same trade as my great-great grandfather - carriage makers and/or painters.  I subsequently came across a descendent of this Miles and Honora Forbes who matches with my DNA.  In fact, one of their descendants and my uncle both served as judges in our county court system here and never knew they were 4th cousins!

Today I looked at a couple of records that popped up for Miles & Honora, baptismal records for two children in the records of Templeboy parish in the diocese of Killala in County Sligo; a daughter Miriam baptized on December 3, 1827 and a son Jacob baptized also on December 3, 1929.  For Miriam, her godfather shows as Michael Gallagher who is listed on tithe applotment book listed above with James Forbes (which is my great-great grandfather).  That book shows the Townland/Street as Barnacoghill.

I'm hopeful this has allowed me to find our home town for this family.

I looked at Templeboy baptism register on National Library of Ireland site to get a better view. 

I think that "Miriam" was actually "Mariam". Her name in secular life may have been Mary or Maria. Compare letters in her name with the word "filiam" (daughter). (See also  "Mariam" baptised  25th Nov., higher on same page.) Godparents Michael Gallagher and Bridget Keoghanan. 

Jacob translates as James. Godparents John Forbes and Maria (again possibly Mary) Gallagher.

Variations of Honora may have been Honor, Hanora, Ann, Annie and Nora(h).

Marriage registers 1815-1837 and unusually, some death registers from that era for the parish are on the NLI site. If Honora wasn't from that parish, look for a marriage in nearby parishes.

When looking at Tithe Applotment books, keep in mind that the names in them were a minority. Only heads of household who occupied agricultural land over 1 acre were included. The Michael Gallager who was in the Tithe Applotment book may not have been the same Michael who was godfather to Mary. The baptism sponsor may have been a brother or cousin of Honora. The Michael in Tithe Applotment book may have been Honora's father, grandfather, uncle, brother, cousin or more distant relative,  or even no relation.

I'm also researching Forbes from sligo.

My 4th great grandparents Patrick Forbes and Catherine Forbes.
Married about 1830 in Ireland.

They had the following children I believe all in Sligo.

Ann 1833 ireland
Dudley 1835 Ireland
Sabina 1837 Ireland (Colourful criminal past)
Patrick 1839 Ireland
John 1842 Ireland

I know by the 1851 census they were in Newcastle England.

I have very little info on The Irish details as I can't find much! But hope that these names may ring a bell with others x

I've done DNA via Ancestry.
My tree on Ancestry is "Thompson Clan and Co"
I have many unknown matches. Not really 100% on how to use the info it gives!

I think these guys may be some of my paternal ancestors or cousins. My Forbus roots seem to trace back to Abbeville/Pendleton/Anderson, South Carolina around 1800 with an Edward Forbus. He is Alabama in 1840. My father is waiting on his upgraded test results on familytreedna.com (y-37 to y-700). We seem to match with John Forbes 1810 in Sligo. I would love to know more about this family in Sligo and their history. Are we really Forbes?
