Hi My Grandfather Patrick McInerney was born in Drumcharley in 1890, from the research I have done to date it seems the McInerney's lived in Drumcharley from at least 1826. I would love to find out how far back our connection goes and anything else I can find out about my family. I would also like to find out what happened to my great Aunt Ellen (Lena) McInerney and Daniel (Dan).

Would love any information on my grandfathers family

Regards

Sue

  • Dear Sue:

Many thanks for your inquiry re the McInerneys from Drumcharley.

I have done a very quick search for you and this is what I have found.

You are correct in assuming that the McInerneys were associated with Drumcharley from the 1820s as there is a James McInerney recorded at Drimsalagh (as Drumcharley was spelled)  Townland in Tulla in the 1826 Tithe Applotment Books.

In addition, a Daniel McInerney is resident in Drumcharley in Griffith's Valuation, 1855.  Also, in the 1901 and the 1911 Censuses, there are 2 McInerney families in Drumcharley.

I believe that the particular family that you are looking for is John McInerney.  He is listed as the father at House # 4 in the 1901 Census with 6 young children:  Margaret, 18; Delia, 16; Daniel, 14; Lena, 12; Patrick, 10; and John, 8.

The same family in 1911 only lists John (father) as resident along with his daughter, Lena (22).

There is a McInerney family that still lives in the area and if you would like further information, I can contact them on your behalf.

In addition, you will find that the Clare County Library website is a terrific place for Clare information.  That is where I was able to access the above for you. Their web address is:  www.clarecountylibrary.ie.  Also, we have just been given training on scanning and recording our local graveyards in Tulla.  If you check the website, www.historicgraves.ie and click on the link to Tulla, Clare, you will see the photographs of the headstones and the some of the inscriptions transcribed.  We are hoping to have most of the inscriptions done early in the New Year.

Many thanks for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out.  Please join our web page as we are continually updating our information.

  • Hi Jane,

Thank you so much for your reply I would love to be able to contact the McInerney's you mentioned. I have been told that the Minogues that currently live in Drumcharley are also related by marriage and they live in the same house the McInerney's lived in.

Do you know if there is any way of being able to trace back further than the 1820 as to who lived in Drumcharley, I have managed to also find out who owned the land back to 1632 but not who lived on it.

    Regards

    Sue

  • Hi Sue:

If you look at the Clare County Library website, and look for list of Freeholders 1819, I believe, you might get more information.  Land records are sketchy but it might be possible to find something.

I will contact the McInerneys and can I give them your e-mail address?

  • Hi Sue:

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner.  I wanted to let you know that we are hosting a Weekend of the Welcomes here in the parish as part of the Ireland Reaching Out project from 9 - 12 August 2013.  There will be a number of events taking place, including genealogy, heritage, history and music events.  If you are planning to travel to Ireland during that time, we would love to meet you and help you re-connect with the parish.  If you are travelling at another time, please let us know so that we can arrange to meet you to show you around.

I have not made contact with the McInerneys but will do so in the next week or so.

    All the best,

    Jane.
