Family tradition says that my great-great-grandfather was named Patrick O'Hara, and that he was a schoolmaster in a town near Mohill.
Patrick died in the famine in the 1840s, and his wife Mary (Gallagher) O'Hara and her four children (John, James, Timothy, and Terence) emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts, along with her brother and his wife (John and Katherine Gallagher).
I am a descendant of Timothy; he died 24 November 1905 in Cambridge, Mass.
Any leads on this Patrick O'Hara will be welcome.
Many thanks.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for your message.
You could try to find some information on Patrick and his family in Church records. Most Catolic records are held locally. One website which may be of help to you however, is teh irishtimes website. Here it gives an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. Here is a link for Mohill parish:
For Church of Ireland records check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/
You could also check the Tithe Applotment Books. These were a land survey that was carried out between 1823 and 1838. This survey doesn't have any genealogy information, however it will tell you if Patyrick owned any land and how much. You can search this here:
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
Some other websites which may help you in your search are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
Family Search: https://familysearch.org/
I hope that some of these links help. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
