Researching the family of Sanford Patrick ENGLAND born Nov 1837 in St Michael's Roman Catholic Parish, city of Limerick, Co Limerick, Ireland.

Sanford's parents *believed to be*:

James ENGLAND and Hanora BROWNE.

Sanford immigrated to the New York, U.S.A. on 25 Oct 1856 on board the ship "Cornelia Lawrence".

Sanford was living at 10 Roosevelt St., New York City on 22 Oct 1860 with close friend Denis SHANAHAN.  Sanford and Denis were both Naturalized on this date and both had the same witness to their naturalization, one William I. GOONAN of 90 Baxter St., NYC.

Sanford was the best man at the wedding of Denis SHANAHAN and Ellen KERRIGAN on 04 Jan 1861 at St. Brigid's Roman Catholic Church in Manhattan, NYC.

Sanford enlisted and served the entire duration of the U.S. Civil War with the New York 73rd Infantry Regiment.

At the end of the war in Mar 1864 Sanford was appointed a clerk in the Adj. General's office in Washington, D.C.

Sanford married c1864-65 to Mary Susan Bridget WHELAN (b Jan 1848 d/o William WHELAN) and the couple had 3 children -

  • Adelaide "Adeline" "Addie" England (b c1865 Washington DC, married George L JOHNSON)
  • Mary England (b c1867 Washington DC)
  • George Washington England (born 28 Feb 1870 Washington DC, married Dorothea "Dolly" YOUNG 1913 in Manhattan)

Sanford died 26 Apr 1870 in Washington D.C.  His widow survived him for many years and finally died on 17 Jan 1924 and is buried in Mt. Olivet Roman Catholic Cemetery, along with her daughter Addie (Mrs. George L JOHNSON) in Washington, D.C.  Cemetery records indicate that her husband Sanford Patrick ENGLAND is NOT buried there with her.

Sanford is mentioned in a letter written c1865 by my GrGr Granduncle Denis SHANAHAN ( born  1834 Powerstown, Co Tipperary, Ireland; died  1867 Jersey City, New Jersey, USA) and is known to also have corresponded at the close of the civil war with my GrGr Grandfather Michael William SHANAHAN (born 1842 St. Patrick's RC Parish, Limerick - died 1887 in Coldwater, Tate Co, Mississippi, USA).  Denis and Michael SHANAHAN were the children of Bridget LUBY and Thomas SHANAHAN (married Oct 1833 in Powerstown, Co Tipperary, both died Bet. 1843 - 1856 in Co Limerick (most likely in the city of Limerick).

Would appreciate ANY feedback from anyone who has done any research on the ENGLAND family from Co Limerick or anyone who has and ENGLAND and BROWNE connection anywhere in Ireland, or anyone who has connections to the ENGLAND family here in the U.S.A.

Thanks so much!  Kathy
