My Grandmother on my dads side had told me years ago that her parents had immigrated over here to the USA from Ireland during around the depression in the 1920s or so. Was hoping to find out who they were and what part of Ireland they came from.. I have tried ancestry.com and have had acquired no information regarding this subject. Her maiden name was Guinn, I have some 2nd or 3rd cousins whose names are also Guinn the great grandsons and great-granddaughters of Henry Guinn her brother.

Her name is Ferrel and she had a brother named Henry, who both are still alive.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Is it possible to get anymore information from your grandmother or Henry?  Do they have any documentation belonging to their parents that mentions any placenames in Ireland?

Do you know much about their emigration? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. If you knew what city they arrived at it could be a place to find more information-and perhaps even an exact place of origin. You should check the US National Archives webite for information at

    http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

Do you know the names of their parents? If so you could do a search for the in the census records of 1901 and 1911. You can do this here:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

You could also try doing a search at https://familysearch.org/

and www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.html (Catholic and Church of Ireland records for the pre-1900 period are currently being uploaded here free of charge. However this is an ongoing process so not all records are available yet)

Some other websites which may help are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

I hope that some of these help you get started on your search. Remember to post any new information that you find as the more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,
