I am from the 6th generation of Dunlap/Dunlops here in Ottawa Ontario Canada.  We have been researching our family tree for many years now but have not been able to trace our family line back in Ireland.

My ancestor Gabriel Dunlap arrived in Old Chelsea Quebec around 1818.  His wife Catherine Hoben (born circa 1778, ? spelling) and 5 children accompanied him.   They were William (born circa 1798) Gabriel (born circa 1803), Catherine (born circa 1810), Elizabeth and Sarah.  Our records indicate that Gabriel Senior may have come from Co. Roscommon.

We also believe that there may have been other children left in Ireland when they immigrated.

Our records indicate that a James Dunlap who settled in Renfrew Ontario may be Gabrieal Dunlap Senior's brother.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

One of the main pieces of information that you need when researching your family history in Ireland is a location. Most Irish record sources- parish records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.

Do you have any other documentataion that mentions a specific place in Roscommon? Do you know much about Gabriel's emigration? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival ather than that of departure. If you knew where he entered Canada it may be a place to find more information and perhaps even an exact place of origin. For immigration information in Canada check the NAtional Library and Archives at http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html

Do you know the names of any of the children that may have remained in Ireland?

Perhaps you could try getting in contact with the local genealogy centre in Roscommon for possible assistance-however, a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:

Some websites which may help you get started in your research are:

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

I hope that this helps. Remember to post any new information that you come across as the more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search. I hope you find a more specific location in Ireland-if you can find this things will open up and you will then be able to search further.

    Kind regards,
