James Lavery was born in Ulster May 4 1829 and immigrated to Canada in 1832. In the 1851 Canada Census he resided with Hugh and Martha Lavery in Hamilton Ontario and was a carpenter. He had three brothers Thomas Henry and George and two sisters Catharine? and Maryann. He married Charlotte Johnston in Gore Ontario June 8 1854 and they had twelve children Maryann, Martha Jane, Samuel, William Thomas, James Alexander, John Ridley, Charlotte, Herbert, Elizabeth Ida, Frederick, Mabel, Francis. I believe that Martha or Margaret is his mother but I question whether Hugh is his biological father. He spent the majority of his life in Hamilton and was a methodist. He formed a business in Hamilton as a builder. He died in Hamilton Ontario May 29 1920.

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
I did a search for Hugh Lavery in the Tithe Applotment Books. These were land records compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland. Two results were returned, one of which was from Co. Down in Ulster. Unfortunately these records offer no genealogical information. However, it may be used as a starting point. You can see the results here:
Another important source of information are church records. You generally need to have a parish name in order to know which rcords you should be searching. Perhaps you could try and search for James in Drumgooland parish records? You mentioned that James was a Methodist-do you know if this was his family religion?
For information on Methodist records in Ireland follow this link:

For Church of Ireland records check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.
Most Catholic records were are held locally. For an overview of what records are available in specific parishes you can use the irishtimes website. To see what is available in Drumggoland parish follow these links:
Drumgooland Upper http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Down&parish=Drumgooland-Upper&churchid=449
Drungooland Lower http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Down&parish=Drumgooland-Lower&churchid=448
Do you know much about the family's emigration? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. If you knew which port they arrived at it may be a place to find more information and perhaps even an exact place of origin. For immigration records in Canada check the National Archives and Library of Canada at http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html
