My great grandfather, Hugh Reilly, joined the RIC from Cavan in the 1840's. It appears he may be the son of Owen Reilly, a publican, and his wife Agness, shown in 1841 census to be in Killashandra (Tullyhunco Arva). Am interested in anyone connected to that line and also an explanation of the Tullyhunco and Arva designations on that document.
Any help appreciated.

Dear Pat,
My name is Carmel O'Callaghan(nee O'Reilly) & I am an administrator with the Bailieborough & Shercock civil parish. I live approx 40 miles from Arva. However Arva is a small town & townland (a townland is the smallest parcel of land) in the Barony of Tullyhunco, in the civil parish of Killeshandra.
Arva is too far away from us to be part of your family.
I browsed the 1901 census at Nationalarchives.ie & while there are lots of Reilly/O'Reilly, none are listed as publicans, though there are several shop keepers.
I dont know what information you have on Hugh, but you can find links & details on how to find more information on RIC on their website under family research on www.royalirishconstabulary.com
You may also find reference to the family in the Archived Anglo Celt at irishnewsarchive.com it is a subscription site & if the family had money, the funeral is detailed with all notable people who attended named & the relationship detailed, also if they were connected to any of the political societies, condolences would be offered to the family members it is addictive reading the old stories, but I have found it useful.
I hope I have been of use to you.
Best Wishes
.

Carmel,
Your information is the best I have received on Reaching Out thus far. My colleagues and I in the states are finding it hard to understand the various designations such as civil paris, townland etc.
I have connected with the various RIC sites, including the museum in N. Ireland. My Ggrandfather joined just before the famine years and died in 1988 before RIC became very controversial.
I agree that the obituaries are addictive. It's the first thing I read in the morning anyway. I will search there for Owen.
Hugh Reilly is my only ancestor outside of Donegal (he married in at his second posting). I only wish we had a parish administrator as helpful as you up there. I am an international volunteer for Ireland XO. So if you are looking for anyone stateside, let me know.
Gratefully,
Pat Reilly

Thank-you Pat for your kind remarks, what part of USA are you in?
I have to do research on RIC in my own family, which includes digging out some scandal. I will tell you how I get on, it will mean me going to Dublin so I reckon it will take a few trips. When I go i will take your info & see what is available.
I did a google on Killeshandra history & this link came up - Killeshandrahttp://www.ancestryireland.com/online_articles/KilleshandraEmigrants.pdf, had youalready seen this?
Best Wishes Carmel
