You could try looking into their emigration for information on them. Generally more information was given at the port of arrival, so you may be able to learn more about them there-perhaps even find out a more exact place of origin. For immigration information into Canada check the National Library and Archives here:

The US National Archives may also be helpful.

You could try searching for them in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. Although these do not give any genealogical information they can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. There are two:
