My grandfathers surname was Toohy and his given names were William Harry.

All we know is my mother and her sisters were born in Charney, Quebec, Canada.

They then moved to Montreal,  My grandfather passed away and was buried in Montreal on 14/07/1947.

All our aunts and Uncles are deceased and not much if any ancestral information was passed on.

Do you know how old your grandfather was when he passed away ?

Could his name have been William Henry Toohy ?

    Name: William Henry Toohy
    Spouse: Florence Condron
    Event: Mariage (Marriage)
    Marriage Year: 1897
    Marriage Location: Richmond, Qu?bec (Quebec)
Place of Worship or Institution: Ste-Bibiane

The name Toohy could have  been spelled differently here in Ireland, Thowig, Towhey , Touhey

  • Hi:

in addition to Anne Marie's reply, Toohy/Tuohy was a common surname in County Clare.  That might be a good place to look if you have exhausted all other info from Canada.  The Clare County Library has a very good genealogical resource section online and you might get mo info there.  Their address is www.clarecountylibrary.ie/genealogy.  Good luck with your research.

  • Yes it most certainly can be Henry instead of Harry.

The spouse is also correct, the only info we had is that the majority of their kids were born around Quebec City (Charney to be precise).  I was having issues finding information on them, so thank you very much.  Now my answer for age is he was born in 1872 which made him 74 or 75 when he passed away.  Since all their children have also passed away it is we the grandchildren who are looking into the family.  Unfortunately they did not pass on much in the way of the family (their parents).

Is he directly from Ireland or is there another link I can follow for them.

Also where did you find this information??  We are very much interested in finding our Irish past.

I'll also look at Jane' link to County Clare

Thank you.  Ed Julien (Toohy from my mother' side)

  • Hi again,

As you now now when and where he married and you have the full birth name you could try and get a copy of the marriage certificate in Richmond, Quebec that might have the names and occupation of both parents on it.

You can also apply for a death certificate from Montreal  or a naturalization record .

All these papers could reveal a lot of  new information.

Finding out who his parents were will make the chance of tracing the family bacl to Ireland a lot easier, all is not lost , we just have to start somewhere :)

    Regards,
