I am searching for my great-great-grandfather and two of his siblings, all born in the Parish of "Kiltulla", Co. Galway.

  • 1.  Nicholas (Wiliam) GLYNN; b.c. 1795.  He married Mary ROCHE (place unknown).  Three children b. in Iowa, USA.
  • 2.  Patrick GLYNN; b.c. 1797; married Margaret (place unknown).
  • 3.  Bridget GLYNN; b.c. 1809.  Married Thomas LEONARD (b.c. 1806, of Co. Galway) c. 1828 in Ireland.  They had 5 children, all b. in Ireland.

Nicholas, along with Patrick & Margaret, arrived in Jones County, Iowa Territory, USA, before 1840.  Bridget & Thomas LEONARD arr. Iowa before 1850.  I don't know when Nicholas and Patrick left Ireland or if they sailed to Canada and then made their way south into the newly opened Iowa Territory.

Is the Parish of "Kiltulla" and Kiltullaugh-Killimordaly the same?  What type of parish is this:  civil, Church of Ireland, or Catholic?  Is there a way to loate their township?

Any help to locate my GLYNNs in Co. Galway, Ireland, would be an answer to prayers!  Thank you.

  • Hi there,

My name is Michelle I volunteer for the parish of Kiltullagh Killimordaly, Athenry, County Galway.

The Kiltullagh part of the Kiltullagh Killimordaly parish was called Kiltulla up until the last few years, so records for the area in census etc show up as Kiltulla, Kiltolla etc

There are/were Glynn's in the parish. the most recent Sean Glynn owned Attymon House who moved into Loughrea Town in recent years. You can view some of his family tree here on IRO http://www.irelandxo.com/family/family-tree-sean-glynn-ballynanulty-kil…

  • Michelle, thank you for your informative response!  I've been working on digesting all of this and trying to figure out the second Kiltulla in Oranmore...and I'm totally confused.  I've looked for it on maps and can't find it; but, I did find Oranmore!  Something in me was hoping this 6,000-mile search would be easy, but it never is!
