Name: James Dunne born c 1807 in Dublin.

Tried: 8 February 1837 in Dublin city for burglary while an indoor servant in company with James O'Mara, William Archer and Thomas Murphy.

Sentence: Death- commuted to transportation for life

Arrived in Sydney: 1837 on ship 'Heber'

Possible parents: John Leonard Dunn and Anne Fawcett

Any assistance with information regarding trial or about parents and siblings would help to fill in some blanks

    Unfortunately trial records from the 19th century were among those records that were destroyed in a fire in the Public Records Office at the commencement of the Irish Civil War (1922). However some trials may have been reported in local newspapers. The National Library of Ireland holds a vast newspaper archive, for information on this follow this link:

    You could also try the Irish newspaper Archives online search. You can do a search of the archives for free, however to view specific articles there is a small fee. Here is a link to the website:

    Do you have any other information on James that you can share? Do you know where in Dublin he came from? Without a more specific place of origin it may be difficult to find more information on him.

    Have you tried looking into his transportation records? Perhaps you may be lucky and a more specific place of origin may be mentioned. For information on transportation records check the National Archives of Ireland at: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/

  • Helle there Mike here from Australia - is this the same James Dunne who married a Cross in Australia ?

    We are trying to find more information also - this James Dunne seems to be our lead from Ireland.
