I am trying to trace John Collins, married Margaret Fairfield born about 1823. They are both on the 1861 census of Wales, his occupation given is Musicaner. and both from Dundalk.

Their first born is Thomas born 1853 in Wales. I have a birth certificate of one of their other children which gives me John Collins and Margaret Fairfield as proof of parents.

I cannot find any trace of either John Collins or Margaret Fairfield marriage, parentage etc.

Can anyone help me?

I don't know how they came from Ireland to Wales either.

Thank you

Sue

Our volunteer has come back with the following response:

I would suggest that, as this so soon after the famine the parish records will show the people who left at that time. The Welsh parish records will also show their arrival in that parish as will pension records.  Also, as the man was a maker of musical instruments, trade union and variety artists guilds will also have some information on him.  I hope this helps, meanwhile I will keep looking.

Update:  I have traced a John and Margaret Collins spelt sometimes as COLLENS born in co Louth to Glamorgan in Wales, that might be a place to start.  Ancestry.co.uk should be able to pick it up from there.

    Kind regards,

  • This is a reply to Sue Collins.

I have seen your message on this site.  I believe you have previously been in contact with our Sommerwill website which is monitored by my sister Liz and if you revisit this site you will see a lot of information that I found and she has updated. You will see that Margaret wasn’t born Fairfield and I found  this just prior to our visit to Ireland.

In the last few days I have found more info on Margaret and John which has yet to be put to our site. Apparently these two had two more births – this time registered in Armagh! These are James  - 23 July 1843 and Mary 23 Feb 1845. There is another possible – Margaret 1841 but I have yet to check it from microfilm. This is also registered in Armagh! I was ready to assume that maybe these were infantile deaths but on trying to find what happened to Margaret after John’s death (the presumed death cert would appear to be incorrect) I have found details which indicate that Margaret was living with her child Mary. Speculative at this stage.

All this info should help you on your way. I would appreciate if you could let me know from what part of the tree you belong. Information on Henry’s war history is presently coming through but I have yet to investigate Ann and any info on her would be really appreciated.
