My gr. grandfather was Patrick Tully of Cornacartha. He married Margaret Grogan in 1858. She (or her parents) may have come from Knock area. They had 6 children: Owen, Catherine, Patrick, Michael, Ellen, and Austin J. The children all emigrated except Catherine (m. Pendergast) who stayed at the family homestead (near Tulrahan). The father of Patrick Tully probably came from Roscommon area with his brother c1800 or before. Patrick lived from c 1835 - c1885. Margaret lived c 1835 - c 1880.
One of the Tully brothers from Roscommon is said to have married a Nary/or Neary girl, from Ballynary (in Cornacartha townland).
I am in touch with Ann (Hayes) Mullarkey, direct descendant of Catherine, and she still lives at the same homestead. However, she doesn't know any more about the ancestors than what I have mentioned here. There was also a Nora Tully (born c.1910)(who married a Flanagan) who lived in the same area and who was supposed to be related to the sameTully family in some way.
Catherine's daughter Jane (Jordan) and her daughter Mary Ellen (Hayes) are known to be buried at the graveyard near Tulrahan.
Thank you very much for any help in finding our ancestors.

Hi there,
is that Cornacarta? I was struggling for a while until I realsied I was searching in the worng county (this is Roscommon county Message Board) There is a Cornacarta in Mayo where we also find Tulrahan and I can now find birth details for Michael in 1865 and possibly a Bridget? in 1861 and Martin? in 1870. Civil records only available from 1864 - (Bridget's 1861 is a church record) you can search indexes here - familysearch.org to get Reference No. and then purchase copy from groireland.ie or birthsmarriagesdeaths.ie or I can get them for you.
hope that gets you started

Hello Peter,
Thank you for your message. I had a search done in 1999 by a Mayo centre and I was given the same birthdate information about Bridget and Martin but Michael wasn't mentioned. I'd like to find this new information about Michael. I think this is the right family although there is no known Bridget (maybe died as a baby?). There should also be Ellen (I think she would be the "William" the centre gave me. Martin is probably my grandfather although it was probably read or written wrong as my grandfather's name is Austin. All the known children are Owen (c1856), Catherine (c1857), Ellen (c 1862), Patrick (c1863), Michael (c1869), and Austin (c1870).
I have found 2 Patrick Tullys in Griffith's Eval. (c1855?)living in Cornacartha (Annagh). I assume these are father and son. Patrick Tully junior would be my gr grandfather, married to Margaret Grogan in 1854 according to the same search I mentioned earlier. However, I don't know who Patrick Tully (senior) was married to. These would be my gr gr grandparents.
So, I'm hoping to get back to the level of my gr gr grandparents who I suppose lived around 1800 - 1850 (+/-) and were married c1820. I have information that this ancestor may have migrated from Co Roscommon but I don't know where. He came with a brother and they settled in Cornacartha townland (then possibly called Ballynary). So, I'm stuck here. There were quite a few Patrick Tully's in different areas of Co Roscommon in the Griffith's Eval. If I could find a marriage record for Patrick Tully (senior) with his wife's name, this would be great. I don't know if this would help me find where they came from in Roscommon though.
I have another difficult ancestry problem regarding the oldest child, Owen. He stayed in England (probably c 1873-4) after a seasonal potato digging trip with his father. He is said to have changed his name (to John Oliver?), participated in the Boar War, and eventually emigrated to Australia. I have found a John Owen Tully of the right age who working on a farm in Lancashire (NewtonHeath) in 1881. I have also found a John O Tully (same approx. birth date) living in Newton Heath in 1901, married with children, but not there in 1911. I think he will be a real challenge to find!
Thank you for your helpful suggestions. If you have any other ideas for me, I would be very grateful!
Sincerely,
Cindy

There will probably be more detail on a copy of the original but from what I can tell;
Michael born 4th Aug 1865 to Patt Tully and Margaret Grogan in Registrar's Distrcit of Ballindine
Bridget baptised 24th Nov 1861. Sponsors Michael Grogan and Honor Fiordes.
Church records for this RC parish only survive from 1851 for baptisms and 1852 for marriages so marriage record will not be available and may not have recorded parents' names anyway. There are a few other ways of checking but that can get complicated
Cornacarta has been called that since the early 1600s but there is a Ballynary in Co. Sligo?
Owen might also be a challenge but it's possible. I find a J.O. Tully arriving in Australia in 1908.If he was in the Boer War we should be able to find a service record.
It depends how keen you are!

Hello again, Peter,
Well, it's interesting what you wrote to me.The date you have found for Michael (4 Aug, 1865) is the same date which the research centre gave me for "William" of that family. In fact, there is no William in the family so obviously this was read wrong. I haven't had time to try to find the records myself yet. The baptism date for Bridget (who must have died if this is my family) is the same as what the centre gave me.
Ballynary was supposed to have been a little place in Cornacartha townland (just a little north-east of Tulrahan). Probably about half way (on the north side)between Tulrahan and Carrickacat (on an old map I'm looking at). I was told by a distant cousin, who still lives on the same land as the Tully family in the 19th century, that the name of her road is "Ballynary Rd" and that there used to be Nary's living there a long time ago. The story is that one of the Tully brothers (who came from Co Roscommon) married a Nary girl who was living there.
About Owen Tully, I would really like to have more information about him. I tried to find him in the British military records but without luck. The records were not very clear to me. I also looked at Australia's immigration records (from passenger lists leaving from Liverpool) but there were countless John Tullys and John Olivers. It think there were some Owen Tullys too. So, maybe you have found the right one, with J.O.Tully in 1908. This could very well be. Don't know where I could go with that information at this point.
Thanks very much for your help. If you have any more suggestions for me about any of this information, I would be very appreciative.
Sincerely,
Cindy

Hi Cindy, you must have the map upsiade down! Spellings are all important - the correct standardised spelling is Tulrohaun which is the adjacent townland to the SW. Having said that if you search for Tulrahan on this map it will show you where the old school was. Switch to Historic 6" view and you will see the locations.

Hello Peter,
Could you tell me which map you are using? It must be an online map.
The map I have is one I bought in Galway in 1999 and is just a photo copy of this section of Mayo (Ballyhaunis in the north and Tulrohaun in the middle. It's supposed to be from an old map of the area (but I don't remember the year).
If I'm correct as to where the old homestead is located (It's still there), the old place which my relative told me was called Ballynary, would be on the South end of Cornacarta townland from what I can figure out. Kildarra and the graveyard would be to the West of what was Ballynary.
I don't have any old school house on my map so I would be very appreciative of knowing which map you are looking at. By the way, my grandfather used to talk about when he went to dance at the Cross Rds. I'm wondering if this would likely be the Tulrohaun Cross Rds since it's marked on my map.
When I know which map site you are looking at, I will verify that I'm putting the old homestead in the right place on the map!
Many thanks for your help!
Best regards,
Cindy

Hello. A Owen Tully of the Loyal North Lancs. Regiment and the Royal Lancashire Militia gave his next of kin as Ellen in Manchester. Later gave wife Phoebe in Manchester. Place of birth is a botched spelling of Ballyhaunis. In 1911 he was living in Newton Heath.
If you need chapter and verse on this man I could attempt a PM or email.
