Hi I am a descendant of Julia Maguire (my grandmother) born in Ireland about 1873. I only know that Cenus reports state her birth was in Irish Free State. She may have left Ireland about 1888. Her parents are Mich'l Maguire and Mary (Doherty) listed on a marriage certificate to Bedford Allen who was born in Canada and they were married in Boston, MA.

  • Hi Sue Ellen,

1.Have you searched Castlegarden.org & Ellis Island site to see if you can locate her on any of the passenger lists.  Also do you know any of her siblings, at 15 she would most likely have travelled with others There are other indexes also & if you read this link, you will find other links that may help you

    2. I have looked at the map of Irish Surnames & Doherty is listed 160 times in Donegal, while Maguires/McGuire is a Co Fermanagh name

Given the names they most likely left from Derry.  Also see did any of their relative come over after them, usually family took younger members over or friends children, you may find that they have listed your family as the address they are going to, where they have come from will assist you as to where your family is from.

Also search at familysearch.org for the deaths of her parents, I usually guess that parents were 30 years younger than children & add 100 year & search that period.

Follow every scrap of paper, will, certificate & burial plots, who did she associate with etc,

Its going to be a hard slog.  Best Wishes with it & please let me know how you got on..

  • Hi Sue Ellen,

I too am researching the Maguire Family. This could be a long shot but my Ancestor Thomas Curry married Anne Maguire in Fermanagh in 1887. Anne's Father was Michael Maguire from Doon, Kinawley, Co.Fermanagh. I was unable to find Anne's birth in my rootsireland records.

Thomas and Anne had a daughter Julia born at Gortmullan, Tomregan, Fermanagh. When I checked up on her birth I found she was called Susan. on her baptism record. Julia died in a house fire in 1981, she was a school teacher and never married. Very good Catholic and liked her drink!

Like I said this could be a long shot. Doherty is also prominent in Clones Parish, Fermanagh. Check out Griffiths valuation in ask about Ireland website.

Hope this may give you some fod for thought!

    Cheers Josie
