I am trying to break the Atlantic barrier. My mother's grandparents emigrated from Ireland and settled in Charlottestown, Canada, on Prince Edward Island sometime prior to 1845. Edmond O'Grady and Joanna McCann arrive with 2 children, James  and Mary who were born in Ireland. The family Tradition is that they came from Limerick and that a son was born while on the boat.

There is little information available in Canada and some records list Edmond as Edward. For instance, what is possibly Joanna's tombstone, in Hope River, St. Ann's Roman Catholic Cemetery,  gives her age as 57 years at her death on March 11, 1878.          Their son, Nicholas Douglas Grady married Katherine Amelia McGinn, the daughter of John McGinn and Anna Maria Ryan of New Brunswick Canada.

They dropped the O and became Grady. The family travelled back and forth and several settled in Oldtown, Maine in the 1890's.

I would appreciate any information about the family.

    Thank you for your query. Firstly it can be difficult to further your research if you do not know the townland or parish in County Limerick where your great grandparents came from, however there are some websites that may be able to lead you in the right direction (land records the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or Griffith's Valuation (1848-64)

    These lists constitute the only nationwide survey for the period, and are valuable because the heaviest burden of the tithes to the Established Church, the Church of Ireland, fell on the poorest, for whom few other records survive

    When you say there are little records in Canada, what avenues of research have you followed exactly?include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    I really feel that given the time period that the Tithe Applotment records could be the best source for finding the parish of origin. When you find that you can search for church records.
