Hello-
This family has been a brick wall for 35 years. They may have been from Mayo or Galway, but I do not know for sure.
My gg grandfather was Peter, born about 1817. On various documents his name changed from Farrelly (passenger list) to Farrell (census records, citizenship records). His wife's name was Anna, surname possibly Gorden. They were married when they emigrated in 1857. Son Patrick Nicholas was born in Ireland abt 1855, daughter Anna born in New York 1860.
His brother John was born abt 1813, wife's name Mary Grace. John emigrated about 10 years prior to Peter.
I know it's not much to go on, but any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for your help,
Lori

Hi Lori,
if memory serves me well, the O'Farrall clan is from Westmeath (Leinster). After their king waskilled in battle, many, but not all, scattered to the west, Connacht.
I'm trying to find a link between a family whose name is translated, Hopkins, but they are tied to the O'Farrell clan.
Personally, I ran my dna to help supplement my paper trails. It's a slow go, but working.

Lori,
You might try County Cavan.
I have Bernard Farrell, son of Bernard Farrell and Margaret Conway, born 1185, Killifinlagh, Cavan. His baptismal sponsors (Castlerahan Parish records) were Phillip Farrelly and Catherine Reilly. A sister, Margaret, born 1817, with sponsors Bernard Farrelly and Anne Fitzsimons, aslo from Castlerahan Parish records.
Bernard married Ann Reilly, emigrated to Massachusetts around 1851 with his wife and children, Dennis, John, Mary and Thomas.

Interesting. I did do my DNA but have not yet gotten any matches for the Farrell/Farley side.
Sue, the names you mention really ring a bell. Peter Farrell's brother, John, was born about 1813. Only known sibling. John's children were John (1850), Mary (1852), BERNARD (1853), PHILIP (1855) and Thomas (1857). Where in Massachussets? My Farrells settled in upstate NY, near Saratoga.

Good info, Patrick. Thank you for that. I have very few clues to this branch of the family. This would be my great grandfather Patrick and his father, Peter. I had heard Mayo in some family conversations, but they weren't sure who may have come from there. Only recently I learned that there was a town in Galway named Manulla. My grandmother's name was Manila, and I thought it might be a possibility. That, and she loved a song named "On Galway Bay". Slim leads, but at this point everything is helpful!
Thanks again, and I will check both counties to see if I might find a lead.

All those puzzle pieces will come together, in time.
Cherish the memories, they hold clues to the past.
They are a snap shot in time, brought over from a land and time of our ancestors.
They each yield a ray of sunshine directing us to our goal of finding the answers.
Not everyone hears their family calling to them.

My great great grandfather is James Farrelly born approx 1860 in Lurgan, Ireland and arrived in Australia in
1879 aged 20 years with his brother Patrick aged 21. Their father was also named James Farrelly.
I am trying to find their history back in Ireland before 1879...
