Hi

My name Is Isobel Kachoyan. I am the great grand daughter of John Samuel Quoyle born 1855 Ballieborough  Co Caven Ireland & died 23.5.1918 Rockdale NSW Australia. He married Catherine Murphy from Forkhill Co Amargh in Sydney, Australia in 22.9.1883. They had 7 children & their 6th child - James Michael was my grandfather. His 1st child -Margaret Mary Rochford nee Quoyle was my mother.

John Samuel arrived in Australia, aged 22, in 1877 having travelled to Australia via New York, USA & spending time in New Zealand. He left his parents Samuel Quoyle & Isabella Bell & a number of siblings back in Ireland, including James Quoyle, a teacher, who moved to Galway & had a family there. His son Thomas Nicholas, also a teacher, enlisted in the Connaught Rangers in 1914 & was killed at Canakkale, on the Gallipoli Peninsula, on August 21 1915.

My cousin Chris Quoyle has been mentioned in other msg on this site. He is the grandson of John Willian Samuel Quoyle my grandfather's older brother.

I would be interested in any help pointing in the direction of further information about Thomas Nicholas Quoyle & the Quoyle family in Ireland. I have recently been contacted  by the Duffys - relaitves of Catherine Murphy living in the area of Dundalk. They inform me today that a Michael Muldoon from Galway says the parish of Tiernascragh and in particular Pat Madden  plan some remembrance to Thomas Nicholas Quoyle in 2015. I would be interested in this event & would welcome contact.

Thanks for your time taken to read this.

Regards

Isobel

  • Hi Isobel.

Delighted to hear from you and heres to a great 2013. Im Pat Madden from Tiernascragh parish in Co. Galway and Im chairman of Tiernascragh Heritage Project which is also a branch of Ireland Reaching Out. I have been in contact with Chris Quoyle in NSW in Australia and have sent him some photos etc. of Thomas Nicholas Quoyle. Are you in contact with Chris. He and his wife have done some extensive Family research and has sent me a copy. Im still trying to find where the family are buried in Galway. I have been to Palmyra Park where they lived. The family name is now gone from Ireland.    Thomas's father was teacher at THE CLADDAGH National school in Galway and most likely Thomas was apprenticed to him there. Thomas was teacher in Tiernascragh National School from where he resigned in 1914 and joined the 5th Connaught Rangers in Ballinasloe. As you know he was killed in Gallipolli the following year. He is remembered on panel 183 of the Helles memorial in Turkey. His Rank and No. were Private 3828. If you search the records of the National Archives.ie you will get the census of Ireland for 1911 and just search by surname Quoyle and you will find all of them. There were only 2 famillies in the   entire country(both related).

You can contact me direct at patrickjosephmarian@hotmail.com on tiernascraghhp@gmail.com or phone me at 00353876505561. You can also write to me Pat Madden, Tiernascragh, Ballycrissane, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. I can then send you on some photos and doccuments etc.

Looking forward to hearing from You.

    Pat.

  • Hello Pat!

Thank you for this reply! I am so excited by all the recent contacts I have made in Ireland.

My Aunt, Antoinette Gray nee Quoyle, James Michael's youngest child, is making a trip to Ireland in the next few months to follow up on the trail of the Quoyle family & also the Murphy family - [my great Grandmother, Catherine, from Amargh]

I would be very pleased to recieved any information I can about the family to add to my research & help Antoinette prepare her search in April. In August 2011, I met with Chris Quoyle & his wife Sue at my first cousin's Luke Alexander Quoyle's home & we had a long afternoon of photos & stories. At that time also Antoinette came & her first cousin Paul Anthony Quoyle [youngest child of Bertram Leo Quoyle my grandfather's little brother]. Sadly Paul died in 2012 - he has 2 sisters still living. Antoinette is the last of her 4  siblings alive.

When Antoinette was living in the UK in the lale 60s - early 70s, she made contact with a family in Galway who had lived next door to the Quoyles -  James' 2 daughters & an unmarried son. I would have to contact her & verify details from her diary.

The family name is a bit thin on the graound here - not for lack of offspring - John Samuel Quoyle had 7 children 3 sons who all married but they had only 5 sons between them. Of those 5 sons one died at 9, one had a duaghter. My two uncles had 8 sons between them [7 & 1] but only one of them has in turn had a son - Atticus born July 2012. All the other grandchildren with the Quoyle name are girls! Luke hasn't had any children as yet. I have 3 brothers - all Rochford, Antoinette has 4 sons - all Grays. Catherine her other sister had 1 son - McGann! Chris Quoyle & his brothers may have had better luck handing on the name Quoyle! Its a shame - but it'll not be forgotten - its a very strong gene pool!

I've had a short stay in hospital today - so am not firing on all cylinders - give me a couple of days & I will organise myself & send you what I have written of the family history. May I pass your details to Antoinette - she may find it easier to contact you directly. Please let me know.

Again many thanks for your reply!

    Regards

    Isobel

  • Thank you so very much for all of this! I looked at the original documents as PDF's as found that my GGGrandfather Samuel Quoyle spoke English & Irish! I also saw his signature on a document!

Through this information too I have found another child to James & Margaret Quoyle in Galway - Isidore born around 1890!

    Thank you again!

    regards

    Isobel!

  • Hi Aine

    Yes I have!

John Samuel is my Great Grandfather & it is actually a photo we have of him not a drawing.

My cousin Luke is the photo's custodian & recently another two cousins, Brendan & Chris Quoyle, restored the original, elaborate Victorian frame on this & two other portraits & Luke displayed them at a family gathering on Australia Day here in Sydney.

The family resemblances are numerous & quite scary! We also have a photo of Samuel Quoyle, John's father & grandfather of Thomas Nicholas & Samuel's wife Isabella Bell. Luke's father Morton, who died in 2011, is a complete replica of Samuel Quoyle! Complete! Its astonishing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Funny thing is looking at Uncle Morton with his siblings - my mother etc Morton always struck me as the odd man out! But looking at Samuel's pix [which is also up on ancestry.com with Isabella's ] Morton looks like a modern day clone! [by the way - I don't look like any of them!]

It certainly links you with the past when you can source these sorts of objects! I love when I find a signature on a document - it feels real then for me!

I continue to hunt for clues to track down my past - at present I am stuck on Isabella Bell b1831- she was the daughter of a Prebyterian minister who was lost to her family when she married Catholic Samuel Quoyle in Bailieborough Co Cavan about 1850. I can't even begin to tell you where she was born etc etc! So I continue to hunt & plan to be in Ireland in April 2014 - to meet living relatives in Dundalk & try to look at original documents for confirmation of my roots in Ireland!

My family tree on Ancestry is called Rochford-Quoyle if you'd like to look at more of it!

    Kind regards

    Isobel
