I am Mary Hand's great great granddaughter. My records show she was born in Ireland in about 1806-1807; she was tried on 18/08/1829 in Mullingar for stabbing Michael Galvin and sentenced to death on the first Saturday in January 1830. This was commuted to transportation and she was sent to Kingstown. A record of a Mary Hand from Westmeath is found in Kilmainheim gaol. She was then transported for life to Australia and left on the ship, Forth 2 in 1830 for Sydney. Here in Sydney she married a free settler and had at least 2 daughters, 17 grandchildren including my grandfather. I would love details of the Hand family remaining, any birth details and information on Peter Hand who was sentenced for the same crime.

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Do you have any information on the family that remained in Ireland that you can share? Do you know what Mary?s parents? names were? What was her relationship to Peter Hand?
You could try searching for any Hands that were in the area during Griffith?s Valuation. This was a property valuation survey carried out between 1848 and 1864. You can search this here:

You may also be able to find some records at Family Search. This has a huge database of records including a collection of Irish births, baptisms, marriages. You can search this here:
You could also try searching the indexes to civil registration records, which begin in 1864. You can do so here:

Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,

Thank you. I will spend some time going through this information. All I know about Mary was that she was 22 and a dairymaid. Peter, her brother was a lad of 15. He met a violent death in the colony of NSW.
