Good day:)

I'm hoping someone can look up some birth records for me at the local parishes. I do have volume and page numbers , and there are less than 10 possibilities in NAAS and Athy for my Sarah Kelly and Catherine Kelly from 1864 to 1870.

I need the details so I can positively ID them with their parents Michael kelly and Mary Donohoe.

I couldn't find ATHY in the parishes for Kildare on the XO site, but that is the Parisg listed in the Civil Registration Index.

Has the Parish name changed due to divisions? which parishes are now in what was Athy?

Appreciate any help. All the best. Slainte'

    Hi Frank,

    Thank you for your message.

Perhaps it may be an idea to contact the parish priest directly for some possible assistance with Church records. Here is a link to the contact page:

You could also try contacting Kildare Genealogy for assistance- a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:

When it comes to land divisions in Ireland, it can sometimes be confusing. Ireland is divided according to both Roman Catholic and Civil parishes. Perhaps the Athy parish that is listed on the Civil Registration Index is the Roman Catholic parish. In terms of Civil parishes however, the town of Athy belongs to both St. Michael?s and St. John?s parishes.

Here also, is a link to a website that gives a good explanation of the differnat land divisions in Ireland:

I hope that this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Frank

I came across your message and would like to help if I can. Firstly can you give some more details please?  Have you confirmed Michael Kelly and Mary Donohoe were living in Kildare?  Were they married there?  If so do you know when?  Did their daughters stay in Ireland and marry?  And if so do you know to whom?  I am just unclear as to what your information is based on to bring you to where you are now.

Lots of questions, I know, but a bit more detail might help to narrow down the search for you.  Unfortunately some parish offices won't let the general public view their registers and you have to send a written request for information, and there may be a fee.  However, there are copies of church registers in the National LIbrary of Ireland on microfiche which are free to view - but these can be missing some years and are often very difficult to read and view.

The volume and page number you mention above might actually be in reference to civil records and to request all of the birth certificates you have found to identify the correct 2 children would be expensive.  So perhaps going back a step might help move you forward.

I hope to hear back from you soon.

    Regards

    Linda
