Thomas Hearn born November 1812 Dumborma, Fermanagh - died 27 October 1877 Parramatta, Sydney, Australia
I am trying to locate my 4x Great Grandfathers family in Fermanagh.
Thomas was the son of Terrance Hearn and Catherine Hewish. He married in abt 1836 to Catherine McManus. The daughter of Felix McManus and Cecilia McKew. All of whom were from Fermanagh.
In April 1842 Thomas and Catherine arrived in Sydney with their children James Henry born 28 July 1837 and Elizabeth Frances born 3 Nov 1839. They arrived on the "James Mathieson' under the name of HARRA. They had a further eight children the eldest of these eight was Patrick John born 17 Nov 1844 Abercrombie, New South Wales, my great great great grandfather. They also had Terence, Thomas, WIlliam, Joseph, Catherine, Owen and Felix.
With them onbaord the ship was Catherine McManus's sister Rose who was married to Robert Maguire.
The spelling of the family name has several variations the most common is to add an E to the end spelling it as HEARNE. The other is to add an "A" in front ie; A'Hearne
I have found the family under: Harra, Hearl, Hearle, Hearn, Hearne, Hearnes and Hearns.
These are just with the records in Australia.
Can anyone please give me some further clues to this family?

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
I hae been unable to find a reference to a Dumborma in Co. Fermanagh. However, there is a Drumbarna townland..could this be Thomas? place of birth? http://www.logainm.ie/Viewer.aspx?text=Drumbarna&streets=yes
Drumbarna is part of the civil parish of Magheraculmoney, so this may be a good place to start your search.
You could try looking for information in Church records. Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which you may find helpful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Magheraculmoney follow this link:
For Church of Ireland records check: http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.
Family Search also have a large collection of records available online. You can search these here: www.familysearch.org
Have you tried looking in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century? Although these do not contain any genealogical inforamtion they can smetimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Boks (1823-1838) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/fermanagh/index.html
I hope this is helpful. Remember to post any new inforamtion you find. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Kind regards,

Hi dfoster150,
My husband's family link to Robert and Rosanna Maguire. Rosanna, as you know, was the sister of Catherine Hearn.
I am not sure if you are aware of the Hearn family link to a property by the name of "The Wren's Nest", just south of Tuena, NSW. There is a cemetery on the property which has a number of Hearn family graves in it. One of those graves, (for Joseph Hearn), makes mention of his birthplace as "Rabbit Island", Fermanagh. There is also a grave in existence for Catherine Hearn and for Rosanna Maguire. The cemetery is on private land, and you would need to make contact with the current owners if you wish to visit it. I am not sure who presently owns the property. Tuena post office might be able to help you.
We visited "The Wren's Nest" some years' ago. The property is one of the oldest in the district, and it still had the original homestead on it (though in a dilapidated state of repair).
I am unable to help greatly with the Irish end - so few records exist for the area. I did find reference online to a Maguire descendant still living on Rabbit Island until fairly recently. My husband's ancestor, Robert Maguire lived nearby at a property called Drumbarna on the shores of Lough Erne. He farmed this with several others. The Tithe Applotment Index may help you to find the Hearn clan.
I do hope that this of some help. All the best with your research.

I'm pleased to find this. We may have a connection. The mother of my convict ancestor, Margaret Sullivan, was Catherine Aherns. After arriving in Sydney in 1820s, she married Lawrence Foley. They settled exactly this area of the country around Abercrombie 1830's on.
just a thought, Mary Searle
