The MONAHAN family has lived in and around Tynagh for a long time.  Realtives have traveld there and confirmed their origins.  CATHERINE MONAHAN married  FRANCIS MURPHY (year unknown). Their son MARTIN MURPHY b. 1833 married my great grandmother, BRIDGET MAHON in Massachusetts, USA in 1860.  I do not know if Bridget was from Tynagh however.  She claims to be from Galway as do her brothers and sisters but, everyone she knew here was from Tynagh or Loughrae.  Bridget's father was RICHARD MAHON.  Richard married BRIDGET KENNEY in Ireland and never came to the USA.  RICHARD MAHON may have had a prior wife.

So, I am searching for any trace of the family headed by RICHARD MAHON: wife BRIDGET KENNY who may have lived in the Tynagh Parish. Their children were BRIDGET MURPHY-JACKSON (nee MAHON) b. 1838; MARY QUIRK (nee MAHON) b. 25 Dec 1845; SABINA DUGAN (nee MAHON) b. 1846; JAMES b. 31 Mar 1855; MICHAEL b. 1858.  All children were born in Galway.  The MAHON sons were not litterate. They were miners and rock quarry workers. The MAHON ladies were educated and litterate. 

BRIDGET MAHON's first humband MARTIN MURPHY died in Arcola, IL, USA in July,1864.  Then, BRIDGET married my great grandfather, JOHN JACKSON in Arcola, IL in 1865. John converted to Catholisism immediatly before the marriage but, had been a member of the Anglican Church of England. In time, the Jacksons became cattle ranchers in New Mexcio, USA and raised 10 prosperous children.

Any information on this group would be reatly appreciated.

    I have been on to the parish priest in Tynagh,Loughrea, Co.Galway and the only Mary Mahon he can find in the baptismal records is one who was baptised in 1822 whose parents were John Mahon and Brigid Sellars.

    How wonderful that you responded to my posting.  Thank you very much.  I didn't have much hope that someone actually read these postings. There are so many of them.

    Unfortunately, this Mary Mahon (b. 1822) does not appear to be the one I am searching for but, there is a chance that Richard had a previous wife who was named Mary. There is just no way of knowing without a record of Richard Mahon or any other member of the family being present to say that this Mary fits.

    The only Richard Mahon I find in the Griffiths Evaluation resided in Coolagh (Abbeygormachan) but, the evaluation does not say anythong else about him or his family.  If you know of anyone that would be willing to go to that Parish and check, I would be willing to pay for their expenses.

    Anyway, it may be very possible that the Mahon family was not from Tynagh (or Shangarry) and only married into a family that was from there. Richard Mahon's daughter Bridget, my great grandmother, married into the Francis Murphy-Catherine (Monaghan?) family from Tynagh or Shangarry.  Even though, everyone she knew over here was from that Parish, she could have been from anywhere in Galway. My best bet is to check the Richard mahon from Coolagh.

    Once again, thank you for your efforts. Please extend my gratitude to the Parish Priest. If there is anything I can ever do for you here in the USA, I would be willing to try.

    I came across your post. My GG Grandfather William Murphy was born in Tynagh, Galway, Ireland I believe on April 27, 1819. He married Esther Collahan in 1847 or 1848. There first daughter was born on December 30, 1848 in Clonturkert, Galway, Ireland . I have documents for most of this. There next child my Great Grandfather John Murphy was born in New Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in January 1852. I have most of the records for the family after this. Most except Williams death. I have never been able to find it, but he is with the family in the 1860 census, but not in the 1870 or after. I believe Williams fathers name was Patrick, he also had a brother named Laughlin Murphy, who came to New Philadelphia around the same time period.
    I also noticed on your post that you live in Sacramento, CA. I to live in Sacramento, CA. Does any of my information sound like we could be from the same Murphy family?
