Looking for any information or contacts for my husband's family.  His g'father Patrick O'Brien lived in Old Pallas till he emigrated to Australia in his early 20's round the turn of the century.  His parents were Michael O'Brien and Mary Maloney.  Their house is still standing in Old Pallas (Sunglen).  I don't know how many siblings he had or what became of them - hoping we might find there are descendants of some of them still living in the area.  We are coming so Ireland in a few weeks and want to spend a month in Co. Limerick so very keen to make any contacts with locals, especially those who know the history of the area or may have some memories of the O'Brien family. Thanks!  Mary Ross, Brisbane, Australia

  • having trouble attaching photos but tell Connie that the previous owners of the house were the McCormack's.  I'm not sure but I think Noel has passed away and his wife may have moved away.  I'm presuming the house has new owners but I don't know any details.  That might help him identify it till I can get pictures!

    Thanks, Mary

  • Hi Amanda,
I knew Noel McCormack very well, he was a great family friend, in fact I was at his funeral. He was one of life's gentlemen and very popular locally.
He was buried in Emly about 4 or 5 years ago. His wife Eileen, still lives in the house in Sunglen.
She was Franklin from Corelish, just a few miles away.
Noel was very old, over 90 when he died. I'd say Eileen is in her 70's now.(don't know if I should be guessing a woman's age)
But they wouldn't have been the previous owners, they would have been the subsequent owners as Eileen still lives there.
Noel hasn't any children and I'm not sure about any living relatives, except for the neighbouring farm which was belonged to John McCormack who I believe was Noel's second cousin. John died last year. Both John and Noel were married to sisters Eileen and Nancy Franklin. John has 2 sons and 3 daughters.
I will speak with my mother tomorrow. She may remember if Noel's mother was O'Brien and maybe which O'Brien she was as there are quite a few in this area.
I will get back to you if I can find out more, or in the meantime if you have a photo of the house. It is only a few yards from where I live if I'm on the right track.

  • Hi Amanda.  Please thank Connie for his reply.   I am pleased to hear Eileen is still in the house.   When I said previous owners I was presuming that she may have moved away and the house may have been sold by now to new owners. There is no relationship between the McCormack's and the O'Briens  as far as I know.  I will contact Eileen now that I know she is still there - and let her know we are coming over.  She has kindly let several O'Brien descendants visit over the years she and Noel have lived there. I would love to meet Connie while we are there too if at all possible.  I'm sure he'll be able to tell us lots about the local area.  Thanks!
