I am seeking records of my grandfather & his family from Roscrea area. My grandfather Martin Maloney immigrated to the US in 1900. He was born 14 Dec. 1871. He married Mary Anne Loonam of Banagher, Co. Offaly in Chicago in 1906 and settled in Niagara Falls, NY. Martin's known siblings were brother Patrick and sister Mary. Patrick was born about April 1864. The mother was Catherine and she immigrated with Martin & Mary in 1900 as a widow. Martin's father was also named Martin. Town names mentioned in records include Rathdowney and Clonmore. Grateful for any information. Thank you.

Hi David,
Thank you for your message.
As Martin was born in 1871, you should be able to find his birth record in civil registration records, as civil registration began in Ireland in 1864.
These records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
For more information on these records go to : http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-civil-registration.html
For records of births, marriages etc. prior to 1864 you will have to look at Church registers. Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Roscrea parish follow this link:
For information on Church of Ireland records check:
http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.
www.familysearch.org have a large collection of Church records available online. You may be lucky and find some records relating to your family here.
I did a search of the towns that you have mentioned. Clonmore is a townland in Tipperary. Unfortunately, there are 4 townlands with this name, each of which are in a different civil parish. (Check www.logainm.ie )
I did a search for Rathdowney also. This is a Catholic parish in Co. Laois, which boarders Tipperary. Here is another link to the Irish Times that shows you a map of where Rathdowney is. If you click on the parish you will see what records are available there:
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/laoisrc.htm
You could also try searching in the 1901/1911 census records to see if you can find any family that may have remained in the area. You can search these here:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
