I cannot determine in which Parish the town of COOLACH belongs.  If anyone can tell me, I would be very thankful.

My Great Great Great grandfather's name was RICHARD MAHON.  A man by that name lived in Coolach at the time of the Grffith's Valuaton 1841.  I am attempting to determine if that is the same RICHARD MAHON. Wife was BRIDGET KENNY: Children: BRIDGET MAHON b. 1838; MARY, SABINA, MICHAEL AND JAMES.

  • Hi Jack,

I checked the www.seanruad.com database of townlands from the 1851 census and found no townland or Town with that exact name.  You probably mean Coolagh and I have found there are four townlands with that name in Galway, each in a different parish.  Your townland is in one of these four parishes:

    Moycullen, St Nicholas, Abbeygormacan,or Oranmore.

I searched the 1901 & 1911 census and found a Patrick Mahon with his wife Anne in both 1901 and 1911 census in the townland of Coolagh, the one in the parish of Abbeygormacan. This is most likely your family.  See:

  • First of all:  Thank you very  much. I am truely amazed.

These possibilities are very strong.  They are certainly worth following.  You would not have known that my great grandmother BRIDGET MAHON's first husband here in the USA was from Galway and named MARTIN "MURPHY".  I didn't mention that in my request so, it is especially profound that there are Murphys here too.  They is either related or this is a huge coincidence.  After Martin Murphy died in 1864, Bridget married my great grandfather, JOHN JACKSON in Arcola, IL, USA in 1865.

Now, all I have to do is connect one of these two MAHON familes with a RICHARD MAHON or the MAHON children.  Not sure how to do that yet. All of the children came to the USA in the 1840s and 1850s.  RICHARD's wife was BRIDGET KENNY. He may have had a second or prior wife by the name of MARY (not sure).

In the meantime, I want to tell you again how thankful I am for your response. How very thoughtful.  If you would be willing to do some more checking, it would be interesting to locate a RICHARD MAHON or BRIDGET KENNY related to one of these familes in Coolagh. Oh, thanks for the spell-correct on Coolagh. You are correct.

    Bless you all.

  • Hi Bernard,

I checked the Irish phone book on line and found no MAHONs in Coolagh.  However, I did find two MAHONs in County Galway.  You could just call them and find out if their family ever lived in COOLAGH Townland.  There may still be a MAHON family in COOLAGH as not all people are listed online.  [One of these is a bishop and he marked no calls to solicit.]

I do have a friend that may be able to check the local listing for you.

Anyway, neither of the two are still in the same parish but by car everywhere in Galway is close enough to drive in a few hours or less.

  • Hi Bernard,

Don't forget the time change from here to Ireland.  Don't call them after 8 PM.  It is 5 hours later from our Eastern Daylight Zone and 8 hours later than our Pacific Daylight Zone.

Also, you need to pronounce the townland correctly or the name may not be known.  I think it is pronounced:

    Cool - ack

but not positive.  If not recognized ask if they are from the parish and spell both names if not recognized.

    Best of luck to you,

    James McNamara

  • Thank you for the contacts in Galway, Ireland.  I called the Bishop's number and spoke to his wife.  She was very helpful and is putting me in touch with her brother in law who researches genealogy as a hobbie as well.  I'll contact him and see what he is willing to do to help track down my Mahon relatives.  We'll see where it goes. I'll let you know when and if I find them.  You have been excedingly helpful. Thank you.
