I have looked unsuccessfully for over 20 years for the birthplace of Michael Quinlan who turned up in the 1851 Census, working in Glasgow, when he was still single.
He died in 1860 and his wife who registered his death listed his birthplace as Ireland, his age as 33 and his parents (both deceased) as John Quinlan, Master Shoemaker and Ann O' Malley.
Any help or ideas would be very welcome.

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
You don?t mention what sources you have already tried in your message. I will give a few suggestions here and hopefully you will not have already tried them all!
Have you tried looking at all documentation belonging to Michael in Glasgow? This can include official documents such as financial/tax records, wills, occupational records etc. and unofficial documents such as diaries, letters, newspapers (local death announcements)
Have you tried narrowing down the place of origin to certain counties based on his surname? You can use the Irish Times surname search engine to see how many households had the Quinlan surname in Ireland in the mid-19th century:
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/
You could try looking at church records that are available online. There are a few websites:
www.familysearch.org Has a large collection of records available
www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.html There is an on-going project to upload church records here free of charge. However only a few counties have been covered so far: Dublin, Kerry, Carlow and parts of Cork.
www.rootsireland.ie Also have a large collection of records however you have to pay to view these.
Some other websites that may be helpful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
The National Archives Scotland- family history: http://www.nas.gov.uk/familyHistory/
Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/index.html
I hope that some of these links prove useful to you. Remember to post any new information you find. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Kind regards,
