Michael Sullivan Esker, Clonfert
I am interested in Michael Sullivan, whom the Griffiths Valuation (1857) shows as lessee of land in the townland of Esker, parish of Clonfert, barony of Longford. The plot lies on the south side of the R356, set back a bit as the road has moved, about one mile from the Banagher bridge. The plot is small, and he may have worked in the town of Banagher. His landlord was then James C Harter of Manchester; his neighbours were Eliza Hart, Joseph Troad, Michael Curran, John Fechilly and James Dolan. Parish records show him married to Anne Brennan, and father of Margaret baptised on 27 Oct. 1835 and Timothy born on 13 June 1847. If you have any knowledge of any of this family, please get in touch.

Hi Mark,
I am sorry for not answering sooner. I was making some enquiries about the Sullivan family. I believe that your ancestor may have lived in a gate lodge belonging to Shannongrove House. I have to check this out a little further. If this is correct then he may have been a gates man on that estate. The Sullivan name no longer survives in Esker - though there were Sullivans at Talors Cross, Banagher and there are still several Sullivan families living across the river in Lusmagh. Of the other families that you mention as neighbours of his - Troad now Trodd are found assocated with Banagher and Lusmagh, a family of Currans still reside in Esker, Fehillys are gone, Harts are gone, and Dolans are also gone.
Regards,
