I am looking for more information on John Hodgins who was born in 1766 in Borrisokane and died in Oldcourt, Tipperary in 1816. His father was James Hodgins and his mother Mary Lewis. His wife was Mary Prittie and they were married on September 1, 1786. Their children were James Robert, Thomas A., Susan, John, Adam, Mary, and Margaret.

Is that information correct as far as you can research.

  • Oldcourt is in the Townland of Terryglass North Tipperary. It is a few miles from Borrisokane.

You have managed to get back a long way with your Hodgins family in Borrisokane,Terryglass and Cloughjordan..

You might be interested in this site http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=aek740a&id=I010563 also http://www.cloughjordan.ie/mainpage/index.htm has a heritage page.

    Best Wishes.

  • Thankyou for the information and connecting web sites.

I  also have Young and Shepherd (Sheppard) relatives who come from the same general area of Ireland. At some time in the future, I would like to get in touch with you about these family lines. I have less information but will provide what I do know later.

  • Hi Ron,

What is your connection to the Sheppard's?  Emily Hodgins (most likely the same Hodgins family you were asking about in the other post) was married to my great uncle, James Sheppard.

I have some information on that family if you want to get in contact.

  • Good morning,

I have not been doing much on family history lately, but this past fall I visited Ireland and saw many of the places mentioned in my family tree. I did not receiver much help from the Irish heritage society as their records are sparse.

My father's mother was Annie Sheppard (b.1873. d. 1935) Her father was William Sheppard (b.1843. d. 1972) who lived in Clarendon, Quebec. His wife was Eliza Jane Miller about whom I can find no information.

There are still Sheppard's living in North Tipperary.

  • Hi Ron

We are currently researching Canadian emigration from Kilbarron and part of what we discovered that numerous Hodgins families from the area emigrated Canada in the early 1800s circa 1830 and quite a number settled in Shawville Pointiac Quebec including the family you mention.

The townland of Oldcourt is actually in Kilbarron parish approximatically one mile east of Kilbarron village there is  a castle called Oldcourt near Terryglass but no actual townland

  • Some times it takes me some time to get around to investigating the old family tree again. Just read your message and thanks for the info. When we visited Ireland we stayed in Nenagh for a couple of days and visited Modreeny, Borrisokane, Cloughjordan, and territory in between. I will throw out another couple of names to see if they ring any bells: William James Young born February 2, 1818 in Ireland and Margaret Emily Dowd, born May 3, 1843 in Ireland, and George Young, born 1788 in Tipperary. These people all emigrated to Pontiac County in Quebec.

p.s.: my best friend here is Len Ryan who has been trying to trace his family tree in the same area as my ancestors. An irony here is that our ancestors would not have been friends at all due to religious conflicts.

  • Hi Ron

I have my ggggrandmother Ellen Lewis b.abt 1812,d.1898 from Behamore, Modreeny, Co. Tipp. Ellen Lewis was married with Matthew Hughes from Ballybeg, Littleton, Co. Tipp. They were Church of Ireland members.
We just have the firstname of her father Thomas Lewis, but no live dates. Thomas Lewis was married with Ellnor (Eleanor) maiden name unknown. She was born abt 1763 emigrated as a widow to Canada and died there 1847.

In the Lewis Tree several Lewis were married with Hodgins!

The sister of "my" Ellen L. was Alice Lewis (1810-1901) and m. Thomas Hodgins (b. abt 1800, d. 1870)
John Lewis b. abt 1808 an uncle of "my" Ellen L. was married with Elizabeth Hodgins.
John's sister Margaret Lewis b. abt 1808 married as 2nd husband Robert Hodgins.
Her son William Culbert b. abt 1836, d. 1915 was married with Isabella Hodgins.

Concerning your Mary Lewis married with James Hodgins my guess is that she could have been a sister of "my" Thomas Lewis (gggggrandfather).

  • Hello,

It's been a very long time since Ron started this thread.

I am helping a family descended from the same Hodgins as Ron is. They want to make a trip to see the old family locations. I'm a professional genealogist in Canada and not well-versed in Irish genealogy. Luckily, this particular Hodgins family is featured prominently in an academic book about the Irish from North Tipperary who settled in and around London, Ontario, Canada.

The book is Irish Migrants in the Canadas: A New Approach, Second Edition by Bruce S. Elliott.

Ron, if you are here – or if anyone knows how to reach him – I would love to know more about your trip.

Also, if anyone else has local knowledge, I would like to go deeper with my research and would welcome hearing from you.

I don't know if we are permitted to post our email addresses, but I will try.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who replies,

    Jill
