My Grt Grt Grandfather William J Oleary is according to his immigration records from Ballycrissane. I am looking for the O'leary Family and would love to know the names of his Mother and Father' and where the family was buried as many of them stayed in Ireland. I understand that your church is a new building but would you have records left from the original parish?

William J Oleary, Jan 1856, Ballycrissane Ire. Left Ireland as a Wigmaker in 1880 ; in the records they called him a  " Shop Keeper" He immigrated to American; New York in 1880 and married Mariann T Evans who came from the same area. She was protestant.I am assuming that is why they came to the US

I don't see the townland you mentioned "Ballycrissane" on this list. Have you looked at the passenger record?

Have you seen this gentleman's obit or his memorial stone?

    Thank you,

  • Hello James,

Yes I have and immigration records say Ballycrissane and his work was Shopkeeper. Although, I can tell you he was a wigmaker. William J Oleary is my Great Grandfather and he immigrated in 1880 arr.to NYC. His is buried in Brooklyn Ny and there isn't any description on it.In part because it is a family gravesite.

He  is definately from Co. Mayo it is in a newspaper article in Brooklyn,ny usa

  • Hi Barbara,

Here are all the BALLYC.......... names in Mayo County:

    From www.seanruad.com

I've checked all the BALLYCR....... names in all of Ireland and find this one that may fit:

When you read old handwriting of poor quality, I have seen some writing where it is difficult and some where it is not possible to tell the difference between any of the vowels.  Ballycrossaun [in the civil parish of Tiranascragh in Galway county] (saun part would sound the same as sane) and it might be an open "O" that was read as an "I."

    Hope this helps,

    James McNamara
