Matthew Kerwin born about 1804 married to Nancy or Ann born abt. 1809. Had two sons in Drogheda, Thomas born June 1831 or 1832 and Pat born abt Dec/Jan 1833/34. Arrived in the US in June of 1834 aboard the ship "Howard" originally departed from Liverpool. The family settled in Western New York State and farmed. Thomas's gravestone reads, "born in Drogheda, Ireland".
Very interested in ANY information about the family in Ireland. Thank you! Heidi

Hello Heidi
I checked the local phone book and found a Kerwin and spoke to them. There are various Kerwin families apparently including Drogheda but most are from around Clogherhead a fishing port about 6 miles northeast of Drogheda. He will see if any family have done any research and ring me but do not hold your breath.
A local website near Clogherhead may be of interest http://www.termonfeckinhistory.ie/ This town is about 2 miles from Clogherhead and I see on the message board a Donnelly in USA posted Sept 2012 is looking for a Mary Kerwan slightly different.
Irish civil records only started in 1864 so you must rely on church records and some other like tithe applottment books which are here http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp for the 1830's and only head of land of one acre or more.
Also a subscription site http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/?gclid=CL35mqzzyrUCFcaK4Qod9ykACg but limited searching free. Also try Family Search the mormon site whihc is free.
Sorry rushing now, will return but little else of now.
Regards
Pat

me again got interuppted by a neighbour visiting who has lived locally in Drogheda for over 60 years and he tells me there are quite a few Drogheda Kerwins still in the town and he was reared alongside one family as a child, one of that family, now deceased, went on to become the Irish Consulate in San Francisco.
There are census of 1901 and 1911 online but none before available as they were lost by fire previously in 1920 and some destroyed before that also. It will give you some idea of Kerwins in Drogheda though at that time.
Do you know his wifes maiden name.
For census see http://www.nationalarchives.ie/
I will let you know if there is any further news but do not hesitate to ask more questions if you wish.
