I thought I could help you, but I dont know where Ballynally Church is.  I also have a list of the Bishops & Priests that served in Kilmore Diocese & he is not in it.  Therefore he must be in a neighbouring diocese.  With regards to bmds

If you can identify which townland they may have come from, we may be able to narrow it down.  with regards to BMDS I can get them in dublin once we have identified them on family search, cost is E4 each, I go there once a month.  Have you a subscription with ancestry or Findmypast Ireland, it has lots of records there.

Hi Carmel,

My James Briody died in Northampton, England in 1911. I have done extensive research online  but need help with info that is probably only available locally in Ballymachugh ,Cavan. Ballynally Church is one of the 2 Catholic churches there. I was hoping to contact someone local who had access to the parish registers and gravestone inscriptions there. Edward Briody was ordained at Maynooth in 1898/9 for the Diocese of Ardagh. I have found him in the 1901/11 censuses and know in which parishes he was priest.

The gravestone reads as follows

Main inscription

"Have mercy on the souls of John Briody, Clonlohan, Died March 6th 1898. His wife Brigid, Died Nov 21st 1923. Mary E Briody Died 23rd July 1948, Aged 73 years and her husband Thomas, died 4th July 1958, aged 83 years. Erected by their son Rev E Briody PP Streete."

There is a further inscription at the bottom

"Canon Edward Briody, Died March 25th 1961. His nephew Michael Briody. Died 22nd Dec, Aged 64 years."

This is a big plot with a second headstone which reads

"In Loving Memory of Michael Briody, Clonlohan, Died 22nd Dec 1977, Aged 64 years. His wife Kathleen Died 19th April 2006, Aged 84 years.

Thankyou so much for the inscriptions. They have been very helpful. I notice from the Ballymachugh church website that you have Briody's in the parish. If they are related to the above  Briody's I would like to contact them to see if they know any more about John Briody and whether he could be related to my Connor Briody.

Can Sheila mean the Ballynarry church? St Mary's on the Cavan side, not the Westmeath side? My folks are there, and I saw many Briodys as well.

I won't be back there until June/July, but I'd be happy to take photos of anything you'd like. Members of my family were married/baptized/buried there. The church has been renovated since, but the baptismal font is the same one from back in the day. I have some photos of the church, inside and out, if you'd be interested. I can upload them to you here.

Even if Kevin or anyone else is there sooner, I think I'll still take photos of many of the stones in the churchyard. Digital "film" is cheap :-)

I sent for the marriage certificate of John Briody and Bridget Murtha and unfortunately John's father was Philip Briody, labourer not Connor as I'd hoped! However, if you do take photos of Briody graves I would still like to see them. Hope you enjoy your visit.

As you know, the Ballynarry church is called St Mary's, and there are actually 2 - about 10 minutes (at the most) from each other. One is on the Cavan side, and one in Carrick-Finea, Co.Westmeath. The one in Cavan is in the Parish of Ballymachugh, in the registrar's district of Kilnaleck, Union and county of Cavan. (I'm looking at the 1869 marriage record of my 2X great grandparents, from that church.) The priest who is currently there is very happy to work with people looking for their old ones. I'll be back over in a few weeks, and am planning to take photos of headstones. There are lots of Briodys, but not too many headstones older than the 1950s in the churchyard. I found 2 of mine - 1956 and 1974. They both commemorate everyone for generations.

I'll post photos to you here, if I find anything for you - but I'd recommend contacting Cavan Genealogy, and paying them if you can - they found loads of stuff for me, and I followed up with the lovely priest.

Editing to say - Cavan Genealogy charges about 95 euros per family name, as I recall, but they seem to have access to church records, which is what you'll need, going back as far as 1834. There were no civil records kept regarding Catholics until 1864. The oldest records I have yet are 1851, and they're church records. This trip, I'm going to try to go back another generation...

I'm just back from a visit to Ireland, which included a day in Cavan with the parish priest and a cousin he brought over to introduce me to. The cousin took me to a dozen old sites. It was a wonderful, unexpected pleasure. I never intended to do more than look at the records book! I did get some photos of the graves from the Ballynarry churchyard. I'm sorry they aren't more stylishly photographed, and I will send them if you want.

I found 4 Briody graves, containing a total of 22 Briodys, and 3 more Brady graves. Not sure if the Briodys and Bradys are related. I'll send you one file here, and if you get it, I'll send the rest.

PS How far back do the church records go?

I'm glad you could access the photo. The church records at Ballynarry go back to 1837, with an odd gap of a few years at one point. There are no gravestones that old, unfortunately. Generations of family members might have been buried in a plot before a stone was raised. One of mine, for example, was placed in 1974 over a large plot containing her parents and grandparents, and an aunt. I'm told they are all there, and maybe others. The ones who died nearly 100 years earlier are commemorated on the 1974 stone.

Thank you for contacting me. I would be very interested to hear what you know about Connor Briody.

My great great grandfather James Briody came to England and married Martha Pittam in Northampton in 1854. His father Connor Briody was described as a farmer on their marriage certificate. Census records indicate that James was born c1834 in Oldcastle, County Meath. Oral history has it that he came from Castletown. He died in Northampton on 18 December 1911.

Oral history also indicates that James had a brother who was a Catholic Priest in Ireland and that he rose up in the ranks to become a Canon.

Apparently the family were well off and owned a flax mill in Ireland. They paid James to stay in England so perhaps he was the black sheep of the family or perhaps the financial system of the time made it beneficial for him to stay away.

I would be interested in any of the Briodys names on the gravestones. 

My 3rd Great grand mother Mary Briody born 1829 Ireland and Died 1893 Bristal PA. She married Thomas L Hudson and had 5 children. The only thing listed is she was born in Ireland 1829 but not who her parents were so this is just a lead I am looking into.

I am not sure when/how/what ship Mary (1829) was on or came to America. I am not sure where she met Thomas Hudson but they are listed in US 1860 Census in Brooklyn NY. They may have come over 1845 on the Tarolinta from Liverpool.

I have been able to exclude the Briodys from the Westmeath/Forbush line by comparing their DNA results. Are there Briodys from the Cavan line that could also share their DNA results? My email is kmjonesaprn@gmail.com. I have my DNA on ancestry, FTDNA, gedcom, and My Heritage.
