Seeking information on Thomas Mulrey/Mulrey b. abt 1851 in Dangan, Galway. He married Ellen Nicholson b. abt 1858 in the same area. They married before 1876. Son Thomas b. 12 Sep 1879 in Dangan. He went to Boston, Massachusetts about 1904 with his younger sister Ellen. They joined their sister Mary who already lived in the Boston area. Additional children of Thomas & Ellen were Margaret, Honora/Nora, & Michael (b. about 1893). There may have been more children than these I have listed. Thomas & Ellen are alive in the 1911 census. They live in Slievegorm, Killererin Parish in 1901 & 1911. Thomas (b. abt 1851) probably had brothers Patrick & Michael. Would like to correspond with any descendants.

  • Martin, thank you for the response. I am 99% sure that my husband's family are Thomas & Ellen Mulry who are found at http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Moyne/Slievegorm/1397836/

No idea where their son Thomas (b. 1879) is located in 1901. Have been unable to find him in the 1901 census.

In 1911 Thomas & Ellen Nicholson Mulrey are at: http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Galway/Moyne/Slievegorm/474328/

Only Michael & Nora (Honora?) are still at home. Thomas (b.1879) had been in Boston for several years by that date & had married in 1909 in Boston.

I am sure that the Mulrys must have all be related. Do you know in which parish church their records would be located? Am having a hard time finding out for sure.

    Thanks, Sharon

  • Was reading Susan's and Martin's posts about Mulrey's from Dangan. It may be that one of my relatives may have been related to  your family at the beginning of the 20th century, but it would be somewhat of an arm's length relationship to my immediate family.

My grandfather's brother (and therefore my father's uncle), John Kirwan, married Ellen Mulvey in 1903. Both were from "Dangan".  (More on that later.) Her father's name is listed as Patrick Mulvey. When their first child (Mary) was born, Ellen's maiden name was spelled "Murly". A Patrick "Murly" leased a small amount of land in Danganbeg, according to Griffith's Survey  (1848 to 1855).  When the land leased by Patrick ( as well as my great- great grandfather Patrick Kirwan's farm) was sold under the Encumbered lands law in about 1855, Patrick's name was spelled "Murley".  Not hard to go from one spelling to the next.  If there is a relationship, there were Ellens in several generations of Murlys.

A liitle  demographic background, which I hope will not bore you. "Dangan" is a "place", apparently well used in 19th century Ireland as an identifiable location. It had a post office at that time, but was never a legal subdivision, even though it is used in all kinds of legal documents, as you have seen. In contrast, there are three townlands  (legal subdivisions of hundreds of years standing, but without taxing or police powers (!) that incorporate the name: Danganbeg, Dangan Oughter, and Dangan Eighter.  The PO was in Dangan Eighter, I think. The three Dangans are contiguous, and Danganbeg and Oughter almost surround Slievegorm, the other townland in your histories. My family was, it seems, from Dangan Oughter.

So, we have two more names, Patrick and a second Ellen to add to the mixmaster. It's also interesting that Martin has John Thomas and Ellen from Danganbeg and Susan has Thomas and Ellen from Slievegorm in the same census. Can't be more than a mile apart.

  • Hi

I am looking for information on Thomas Mulry 1851, married to Ellen Nicholson 1861 - they had a daughter named Ellen/ Ellie Mulry in 1885. Ellie/Ellen then married John Kirwan and had children Mary, Margaret, Peter, Katie, Eileen and Delia. (Delia was my Granny)

I would love to know more about the family and contact you all to share and swap information!

Reply has two parts:   (after resetting password and relogging)

    1. To Martin Curley  --  Apology -- did not see your reply of 21 April '13 till now.  As you may have seen elsewhere, I did correspond with Sharon a number ot times before and after her trip to Galway. And yes, there were several Mulry families in and around Horseleap on the last century and a half or at least different generations.

    2. To Jennifer: suggest you read Martin's posts above; he has info on Thomas and Ellen Mulry. There appear to have been a number of Ellen Mulrys of only somewhat similar ages and location. I don't think that the Ellen who was born to Thomas Mulry and Ellen Nicholson was the same as the Ellen Mulry as the one who married John Kirwan in 1903 and who had the children Mary through Delia. I have a Civil Marriage Record that says that Ellen's father's name was Patrick Mulvey (note spelling) and that she was 26 years old, presumably born about 1877 or so, and a note that says her mother was Margaret Nicholson, rather than Ellen Nicholson.

The confusion is easy to see and not easy to see through. In the 1901 Irish census, there were no less than four Mulry families within a mile or two of one another around Horseleap Cross: two in Danganbeg, one in Slievegorm and another across the Tuam road at Derrybaun, in Hillsbrook. Two of the mothers were Ellen and two of the daughters were Ellen (age 14 and 15, too young to have been the Ellen who was 26 when she married John Kirwan early in 1903. However there was a Murly family in Abbey, just down the road from Horseleap, with a 25 year old daughter named Ellen, who was not part of the family for the 1911 census. Her mother was Mary, rather than Margaret.

In any evemt, John Kirwan was my grandfather's brother, and Delia Kirwan Shaughnessy therefore was my father's cousin, so I am interested in understanding all this.

  • Hi Peter,

Yes, I am just after figuring that out today actually as I made contact with Sharon last night!

Thanks for responding, I am definately looking for information in the Ellen who married John Kirwan ( a few weeks ago I gathered a lot of information on the Kirwan family from relations in the UK, thanks to a lovely woman called Julie) and I am now working on the Mulry side.

I will send martin an email and hope for the best!

    Thanks,

    Jennifer

Jennifer  --  so many questions   ---  so many Ellens!

Good news on contacting Sharon   was worried about her.  And Martin seems to know a lot.

Funny how things happen in bunches.  You will have noted that all the comments on this site (Martin's, Sharon's, my own) are going on four years old. And then you start a whole new discussoin. Which is good.  And I had been working on a family tree for my grand daughter for more than a year when a lady named Julie Smith contacted me just last month. As you may know by now, she is tied up with a man named Chris Kirwan, who is the grandsom of Stephen Kirwan (whose tree she is building). Stephen  was John Kirwan's brother. She wrote me last night that she was very recently in contact with a very helpful lady from the family. Please let me contact her and ask if the lady is "Jennifer"...She is extremely good at this family search business.

So, John and Ellen.  Since writing to you, I have obtained a photo copy of the marriage certificate for them (first notice was a transcript). Pretty clearly states that her father was Patrick. And the family ties continue: John's witness was Stephen King (another Stephen); John's mother was Mary King; and Ellen's witness was Kate Mulrey.  Feb. 21, 1903.

And Ancestry has a reference to the birth (20 July, 1872) and baptism of an Ellen Mulry in Abbey, whose father was Patrick Mulry ,and whose mother was Margaret Nicholson. Not exactly 26 yeas old in 1903.

Have to ask  -- are you living in the Dangan area? And was either John or Peter your father? Or uncles? Always prying.

    Later        Peter

  • Yes Peter, it is the same Julie...She was so helpful and helped me understand all the connections. Because she messaged me my interest in this family tree stuff started again! I sent on some photos to her to help with the her tree. She didnt know much about Ellen and she too thought she was a part of the Ellen and Thomas Mulrey family. Now, thanks to Sharon Ive learned a lot about the Mulrey side which is great!

Yeah the dates don't always add up and I'm sure there are lots of mistakes on them, and the same names repeating makes things very complicated!

Yes I live there, and my father is Peter (John is my uncle) ...A few years back Chris Kirwans cousin John and his wife Pat came to visit us, but that was when I was younger, and when I didnt have an interest in this family tree stuff :) Now I know the exact connections so Im glad Julie contacted me!

  • Re Mulry family, Dangan, Tuam, I'm  one of their descendants.  Pat Mulry (born circa 1808 d 6.1.1879) from Killererin parish married Mary  Mahon (born circa 1811 d 11.12.1877) from Athenry parish,  in 1831.  They had five children that I know of.

Laurence, born circa 1839    Pat, born circa  1840s    Ellen born circa 1844   Thomas,  born circa 1851 and   John born circa 1855.  Older relatives never mentioned Michael although a bachelor of that name resided close to Dangan.  He was born circa 1830s.  A Michael Mulry married Catherine Mannion in 1865.  His father was also Pat, but this family were from Feigh closer to Abbeyknockmoy.   This information was sourced from Ellen Mulrys pension application, Irish Genealogy site and family.  I hope it helps paint a clearer picture of this family.  If anyone has information on Pat Mulrys parents etc. I would be very interested.  Unfortunately records for Killererin parish seem to be in short supply.  B.
