The notion is that all the people named here came from County Sligo,Ireland...so it's "family lore".No records have been found here in the USA to prove anything but Ireland.

I'm searching for James Joseph BURNS or BYRNES,born February 1872-1873,who was born in Ireland. He was the son of John Burns & Sarah NOLAN. He immigrated sometime before his marriage, which happened  in 1895 in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania,USA.

James died in Pittsburgh in July 1909. I haven't found any other records for him besides a few City Directory listings in Pittsburgh, his Marriage License & his Death Certificate.

James married Winifred BURNS in 1895 in Pittsburgh.Their marriage License application clearly lists James as James J. BYRNES and Winifred as Winifred M. BURNS.

Winifred was the daughter of Andrew BYRNE and Mary HEALY or KEALY,all 3 were born in Ireland per Winifreds Death Certificate.

Winifred immigrated between 1887&1889 per the 1910 & 1920 Pennsylvania census.Other surnames associated with Winifred included:DUFFY & SHAUGHNESSY...via her sisters marriages. They also lived in Pittsburgh,Allegheny County,Pennsylvania,USA and it's assumned that Winifred came to America with her sisters,Catherine,Anna & Mary.

Thanks,Marianne

Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reasonwhy they left, who they may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given atthe port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g.Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information. -And perhaps evenfind out an exact place of origin. Ellis Island:http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passSearch.asp Castlegarden:http://www.castlegarden.org/ US National Archives/Immigration info:http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/ The Boston Pilot; From October 1831 through October 1921, the Boston Pilot newspaper printed a?Missing Friends? column with advertisements from people looking for ?lost? friends and relativeswho had emigrated from Ireland to the United States. This extraordinary collection of 40,743 recordsis available here as a searchable online database, which contains a text record for each ad thatappeared in the Pilot. http://infowanted.bc.edu/ The next thing you could do is find the counties and places in Ireland your family names are mostprevalent. Look at the website http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ and perhapssomething will match some other clue you may have found elsewhere? If nothing turnsup ? it is advisable to try different variations of the spellings of the names. If you have a possiblefirst name you could try the Irish Census 1901, 1911 at www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ or the landvaluation record called Griffiths Valuationhttp://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml Also have a look on these sites sir.The National Archives of Irelandhttp://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/ The National Library of Irelandhttp://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx The National Archives UK ? genealogy search:

  • Hello & Thank you for replying,

Just so all are aware,I've been working on this family line since the 1980's.

I've searched for both James , Winifred and her sisters  at Ellis Island;Winifred and her sisters arrived a bit too early to have passed thru Ellis Island. Castle Garden & Ellis Island records contain 1000s of James Burns & variants surname spellings. Sadly ,the Castle Gardens records are not complete enough to assertain if any of those James could or would be my great Grandfather.

We don't know which city they sailed in to,we can only assume it was along the North east coast or Canada; and have also searched the Canadian Bordor Crossings, thinking that they may have arrived via the Saint Lawrence Seaway. I've gone a few steps further in hunting for other household members, who may have come along with James when he immigrated, none reference coming directly to Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania or refer to anyone but their sponsors on the Declaration of Intents. I'm hoping to find at least one other person who can link themselves to the  known street addresses in the Pittsburgh area, that I know they lived at.Again 1000's of James Burns are found in records at the NARA...matching one with the information I know to be factual ,has not produced any favorable results.

The Boston Pilot has been searched on multiple occassions using different perimeters, but nothing was found to indicate that anyone in Ireland or the UK was searching for any of them.

The Griffith Evaluation ,a great resource, gets re-searched at least 3 times a year,in hopes of finding something relating to John Burns or Andrew Byrnes plus the possible varients.

I've been on the IrishTimes website, and need to return. The biggest obsticle I had working online from the USA,is when  finding on many websites that require purchasing credits to search or view records...I'm hesitent to give my bank card number online for fear of fraud & wish there was a better way like having those records available via a subscription website like Ancestry . com... but that might open a bad can of worms with some good people !

Thanks for all the great suggestions & comments,I will venture back to those last 4 UK & Ireland based sites today.

    Marianne

  • Hello group,

I'm here to report on my recent successes in locating my Great Great Grandparents ( with surname spelling corrections) John BYRNE and his wife,Sera or Sarah NOLAN, - their son, my Great Grandfather James Joseph BYRNE and his 4 other siblings.

They were no where near the "family lore" reported location of Sligo,of course; they were found in the areas of  Kildare and Leighlin,Dunleckney - Fenagh and Myshall - and Ballykeenan, County Carlow ,Ireland which is where James was born !

I located James' Declaration of Intent - 1st papers - filed in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania on 8 April 1909  in which he stated he arrived in New York City on 13 April 1892 aboard  the vessel named the City of Chicago. By 11 July 1909 - James had died from the Spanish Influenza and Pneumonia;so he didn't live long enough to see his dream come true. I'll take my inquiries for James and his immediate family over to the Carlow message boards.

I have also been able to locate my Great Grandmother,James' wife ,Winifred aka Winnie BIRRANE - one of the many Gaelic spellings for the angelized surname of BURNS.

Winnie was born in  Carrowhubbuck, County Sligo, Ireland - a daughter of Andrew BIRRANE and  Mary HEALEY or HEALY. I've located numerous civil and church registartion documents for her and 3 of her known siblings:

Michael Birrane- born about 1859 - he's seen in 1901 living in  Carrowhubbuck North ,Kilglass, Sligo with his wife Anne and  4 children and his Father,Andrew. I believe he passed away in 1941 in Kilglass. His wife may have been the former Anne FOODY. This is still a gray area

Catherina BIRRANE - born January 1870 in Carrowhubbuck-she immigrated to the USA and settled in Pittsburgh.

Hannah aka Anna BIRRANE - born October-November 1871 in Carrowhubbuck- she also immigrated to the USA and settled in Pittsburgh.

Patience truly is a virtue... I'm glad I never gave up the search... fast forward to 2018 and after taking 3 different DNA tests along with one from one of my brothers, we've opened up a lot of new doors !

    Be well everyone-

    Marianne in Pennsylvania

  • Re your ancestor Winnie, daughter of Mary Healy/Healey in County Sligo. My grandfather Owen Healy was born (family lore) in County Sligo about 1870. His parents were Owen Healy and Bridget McCann or Lynch. Siblings of Owen that we know are Patrick F, John J. and Bridget. They arrived in Brooklyn, NY through Castle Garden. Patrick was the first to arrive, followed by Owen in 1886, then John. I don't know when Bridget arrived, but my understanding is that she returned to Ireland where she married and stayed.  My Owen Healy married Anna Ford and raised six sons and one daughter (my mother) in Brooklyn. My mother was the only one of those seven who left NY. Does my Healy family connect with your Healys? I am on Ancestry.com as Peg1429 and have lots of DNA matches. Are you one?

  • Hi Peggy,

I believe I looked at your Ancestry tree earlier last week !! I remember looking at your Owen Healy and his family.

I have 1 really good DNA match with Jean Bourdeux thru her Healy / Healey / Haley family via a Thomas Healy who was one of her direct line ancestors. Thomas went west to Colorado after arriving in the states. I'll go back to Ancestry today ( Sunday 25 Oct 2020) and take another good look at your tree;I'll message you once I got to your tree.

My Ancestry DNA tree is called the "Fisher Family in Pennsylvania - DNA Tree" by MarianneFisher1 . I've been on Ancestry since the day they 1st went online after getting their feet wet as MyFamily .com  !!
