Samuel Lindsey is one of my ancestors born 15 November 1815, Near Dublin, Cork. I don't have details on his immigration to USA.  He died 5 June 1905 in Altamont, Davies, Missouri.  Thank you.

  • Hi Carol

Thank you for your query. Do you have any other information about Samuel? Was he married? did he have children? Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Your main aim would be to find a place of origin in Ireland. Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city he arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information. -And perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

Have you searched for a death certificate? often a place of birth, parents names, will be listed on such a document .
Also have you checked the census records for similar information?

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp  or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/     or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) https://familysearch.org/

The Tithe Applotment List might be of use to you, or at least interesting for you. These lists constitute the only nationwide survey for the period, and are valuable because the heaviest burden of the tithes to the Established Church, the Church of Ireland, fell on the poorest, for whom few other records survive.

Valuations office in Dublin (http://www.valoff.ie) will have a record of the land registry from 1855 to modern times. This will assist in seeing what happened to Samuel and what happened to his land, if he held any before he emigrated (as it usually passed on to a relation).

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

If you find a place of origin you can then search the church records.
I hope that this information is of help to you Carol.

    Kind Regards
