My maternal great grandmother was Catherine Hayes born Ireland 1855 approx. Source is 1891 UK Census for Bootle, Lancashire. Sadly no other place name mentioned. I have been unable to find a marriage record for her and my great grandfather, Elijah Beckley from Staffordshire so cannot find her father's name and occupation. She had a daughter, Honorah, in Salford, Lancashire in 1883 but there is no record of the birth. It would seem that Catherine never married Elijah. Can anyone suggest where I start in trying to find Catherine's origins in Ireland? Perhaps her daughter, Honorah, was named after her mother?

Dear Johnny ,
Catherine Hayes is a very common name so my advise for now would be to trace all possible records in the UK that might be available. Her death record might reveal some more information.
If her daughter had the Beckley surname her parents were more then likely married.
Did a quick search on www.rootsireland.ie but there were too many results for Catherine Hayes born 1855, Waterford, Tipperary and Cork
According to the 1891 UK census Catherine was born in 1851, the closest match for 1851 being:
Name: Catherine Hayes Gender: Female Baptism Date: 24 May 1847 Baptism Place: Roman Catholic, Kilcummin Parish, Kerry, Ireland Father's Name: John Hayes Mother's name: Ellen Connor According ancestry Elijah married for a first time in 1875 Holy Trinity Church, Staffordshire to Sarah Ann Cartwright, and also had children with Sarah Anne
In 1891 daughter Hanora was a pupil at St Johns Institution for Deaf and Dumb in Clifford, Yorkshire
Catherine and Elijah also had a son William Henry Beckley born 19 Feb 1889 in Liverpool
England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-191
Name: William Henry Beckley Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1889 Registration district: Liverpool Inferred County: Lancashire The son William Henry died in the great war
Name: William Henry Beckley Birth Place: Bootle, Liverpool Residence: Bootle Death Date: 31 Jul 1916 Death Location: France & Flanders Enlistment Location: Seaforth Rank: BDR. Regiment: Royal Garrison Artillery Number: 53448 Type of Casualty: Died of wounds Theatre of War: Western European Theatre Comments: D.C.M. William was married to Jane Lane in 1911 Liverpool , on the marriage cert Elijah is only mentioned
Hope this helps a little bit
Kind regards,
Annemarie

Thanks Annemarie,
You've discovered a lot. I already had most of that information. Hanora was sent to St John's Institute for the Deaf and Dumb on the advice of Father Kehoe of St Alexander's, Bootle. I thought that St Alexander's records would help but sadly they were destroyed in the bombing in WW2. Thanks for pointing me to Kilcummin. It's a possibility I suppose. Will keep trying. Once again, many thanks.
