My g grandfather John Bannon was from Moate, Wesmeath, Ireland.  His parents were John Bannon and Bridget King according to his Marriage Record.  He did move to Scotland and married and had children there  Jean born 1886, Bridget and John born 1888 (twins), they in turn moved to Canada.

In the early 1950's his daughter, Bridget Hopkins (nee Bannon) from Canada was living in Belfast, Ireland, I have an address on Oranmore Street.  I would like to know if there is any way I can find out who was living there at the time and if they have any relatives who may still live there.  I think this may be my last chance to find any relatives and/or ancestors from Ireland.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

  • According to the 1911 census the Bannons were already living at the address Nr Oranmore Street, more then likely this was the family home and Bridget might have gotten the house later on.

The Bannons were a family of flax spinners and linen weavers one of the major industries at the time in Northern Ireland.

Parish of Shankill, number of people in the house in 1911 was 7, and the house was privatly owned  and had 5 bedrooms, quite a big house for the time.

It will almost be impossible to find out who lived there in 1950 as there are no census records available after the 1911 census, even a phone directory did not exist yet as such as most people did not own a telephone by then yet

As the house was owned by the Bannon family it might have been left to a relative after Bridgets death, there might even be a will  that might give a clue

I was able to do a postcode search for the Bannon name , postcode for Oranmore Street is BT13 2RU, unfortunately no Bannons or Hopkins listed, but plenty of Bannons in the area.

    Belfast white pages : http://search.whitepages.co.uk/search/

Hope this helps a little bit

  • Hi Maureen, hi AnneMarie,

I am a Bannon and there are a few of us in Belfast, Westmeath and Galway - where I am from. I recently did some tracing on the surname for Bannon's in Australia and discovered as you did that WestMeath and Offaly plus Northern Ireland seem to be the most common sources of the name.

I can put you in touch with the person in Australia if you like as she has prepared an excellent file on the Bannon clan and was actually able to tell me a lot-much more than I knew. She visited Ireland recently and we helped traced her roots to Westmeath (she found the church her relatives were married in), then Galway City (currently a well known drapery store known as Anthony Ryans on the city's main shopping street) and then on to Kinvara which is a seaside village several miles from Galway city. The move to Kinvara was prompted by a death of the husband and with that the wife and daughters sold the city premises and moved to Kinvara. It was from Kinvara that one Bannon girl emigrated to Australia via Scotland.

    Adrian.

  • Hi Annemarie:  Thank you very much for your information.  I should have said in my note that Bridget Hopkins was visiting in Belfast, I found a book that belonged to my dad with an address for her in Belfast.  She did return to Canada and lived here for many years until her passing. I do think she was visiting relatives, and there are none left who could help me.  Thank you again, I appreciate your assistance.  Regards, Maureen  P.S. I never did receive an email, just happened to check to see if there were any messages and found yours.
