Master tailor

Usually parish records or civil registrations of births/marriage/deaths are the best starting point. Or the surviving census if you can find them on it. I have taken the returns below from the 1901 census returns for coolrain. Thomas is listed as a tailor.

I presume this is Thomas and Kate. The census returns are available at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie where the 1901 and 1911 census can be searched and you can look at the originals which give more detail than above. An index to civil registers is found on familysearch.org. Catholic marriages were registered after 1860ish. Judging from the ages given they should be there, as should their children through birth records. Another site of use is rootsireland.ie which is a subscription website containing amongst other things the registers of the Catholic church. Also of use is askaboutireland.ie where you can find griffiths valuation from the 1850s. This lists a Mary Feehan for the civil parish of Offerlane. Possibly a mother to Thomas? The trade directories may also be of use if coolrain is listed [piggotts, slaters, and thoms]. I may be able to look at these tomorrow.

The following indicates that Thomas and Kate married in early 1882, and the marriage was registered at Mountmellick. The civil registration certs can be obtained through the local hse, or through the general registry office in Lombard Street, Dublin. I am unsure if they are available online. I will check this out.

Thanks for your reply but I already have this information.  Thomas and Kate Feehan were my great grandparents and yes Thomas was a tailor as was his father Michael.  Michael died in 1886.

A witness to Thomas and Kate's marriage is Dennis Feehan and I understood that he too was a tailor but in the 1901 census I can only only find one Denis Feehan and he is 60 (about right) and a servant.  Not sure if this is ghim or he has died.

Thomas' mother was Jane Fitzpatrick

I have some information which I had someone in Irish midlands Ancestry gather for a me a few years ago but i keep coming up with other bits i'd like to know.

Anything you find would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear you've not been well. I'll have to go through the booklet Irish Midlands Ancestry prepared for me and let you know the main bits. Obviously most of what they gave me relates directly to my grandmother and her parents but I now want to try and find out about the other branches as I'm going to the States in September and will be meeting my great uncles family and hope to have something new to add to their information.

I had a look in Annatrim (Coolrain) Camross and Mountrath for Feehan, and found the below in Mountrath burials;

Joseph Savage; 90, farmer, single, Mountmellick (may be the home in Mountmellick)

Mrs Seamus Savage; 42, farmer, married, Clonard. 29/3/1991

Many thanks for the info.

I'll have to take a good look at these when I get a minute. I'm not familiar with any of these Savages or Feehans at dates as late as this. A very interesting proposition.
