In researching my Gormley family, I have found some of them in Griffith's Valuation living in Meenacrane in the mid 1860s.  Any information that I can obtain on this family would be greatly appreciated!

Francis Gormley - born about 1813, wife is unknown, but I do know of several daughters:  Susan(na) born about 1835, Elizabeth (aka Betsy) born about 1840 and Bella (possibly Isabella) born about 1845.

Susan and Betsy made it to the USA.  Susan married John Scandlin and had many children.  Betsy apparently never married.  Records on Bella show that she married Francis McSwiggan 2 Mar 1867 in Gortin, County Tyrone.  Bella had at least 4 boys with Francis:  Peter b. 1868 and d. 1890 in Philadelphia, Daniel & David (NOT twins) both born in 1869 and Francis b. 1872.

That's all I know about my family. Thank you! I'm looking forward to "reaching out" to my Irish cousins!

  • There are two Gormley families living next to each other in Meenacrane in the 1901 census. Michael and John could be brothers to Susan, Betsy and Bella.

  • I also should have mentioned that there are also McSwiggan families in Meenacrane in the 1901 census.

  • Roger,

Michael & Alice, who appear to be siblings by what you sent, would definitely be related since the Francis McSwiggan listed as nephew should be Bella Gormley McSwiggan's son.  Thank you!

As for John, I can't say for sure if he is or not.  He's certainly the right age, but I think that there are many Gormley's in County Tyrone.. and I would expect my Francis to have siblings too.  I appreciate what you sent me, thank you again!
