Searching for needle in haystack, I realize that McGowan is like Smith. Have written to Drumcliffe twice in the past 30 years of searching to no avail. No records past what I know. James Joseph (born 1860) is my Great Grandfather. I only know this from his death certificate in Bridgeton NJ. Any information on this family would be most appreciated. He married a Catherine Colter from Ballymote in abt 1882, had three boys and came to the United States.

You don't mention the names of the three boys of Joseph and Catherine. I found a birth index record for a Cormack McGowan in 1885 in the Sligo registration district. Drumcliff parish is within the Sligo district. I have no idea if Cormack is a son of Joseph and Catherine but you may want to contact the GRO to get a copy of this birth record. www.groireland.ie You need to fill out the form and include the registration district, quarter of registration , volume and page number.

I searched a couple different sites for birth index records for your McGowans with no success. Sorry!

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Boys were MIchael bAug1883, Anthony bSept1884, James Daniel b1886 all in Ballymote?- I am assuming since my records show Katherine from Ballymote.

Fergus,
I am the Ted Maloney of whom you speak! My sister just found this post. My great grandparents, Martin and Maggie McGowan Dunleavy, lived in a small house on the cliff in Cloonagh, Sligo. As of the 1990s, the McGowans still lived down at the end of the road from the Dunleavy house. Here's the aerial photo:

I'm trying to calculate the relationship, but if Martin Dunleavy was your grandfather's brother, you are my second-cousin first-removed...my father's second cousin. Your father and my grandmother (and her brother Pat Dunleavy who last lived in the house) were first cousins.
So anyway, when do you want my entire family to come visit?! Ha ha!
