Dear Sister de Lourdes Fahy-

Words can not begin to describe how excited and grateful I am. My mind is all a-whirl!   Not only have you provided new information (I completely missed Catherine--she is not on the census and her birth record I just downloaded has her father's name transcribed as "Robert") but you have pointed out things I missed entirely.  How did I not see that my great-grandfather Patrick was listed on the census as being born in America!  A new puzzle.  Was someone playing a trick on the census taker?  I recently obtained a copy of a page from the microfilm of the Birth Register.  The District registar has Patrick as being born in Garryland on the 10th of April, 1876 but the registration didn't occur until June.  Another project and research for me.  I'm still working on trying to distinguish all the varying names of Roger's wife Mary (Culeen, Cooley, Cooney, Cullen...a new spelling on every baptismal certification I've found!)

My father did not recognize many of the names of Patrick's siblings, but he did not hear much talk of "the old country" when he was young.  He also mentioned that he didn't think his grandfather kept in touch with family members.  It will certainly be a challenge to figure out where everyone went, and why Roger was left alone with another family.  That bit saddens me some.

I don't know when I'll get to Ireland.  My now 83-year old father is hoping to visit Ireland with my sister this summer and I've urged them to make a trip to Gort.  For now, I've had to make do with a web site I found (oddly not google maps) that allows me to "walk" down the streets of the area.  Yesterday, I "walked" down the road through Faunin!  Amazing.

Again, I am so grateful to you and for this website.  All the things online are wonderful but much of the infomation is lacking or incorrect so having a real, local person is more than I had ever hoped for.  The kind of information you gave, such as a family member being looked after by another family is not the kind of thing one finds on ancestry.com.   Many, many thanks.

As a coincidence, my youngest son who is now 7 is named Nolan. It was a name I saw in a book and it simply wouldn't leave my mind.

Oh!  I'm scrambling to catch up on all this fascinating information!  I am Alison's sister and I will be bringing my father and mother to Gort this week.  I showed my father  the information you provided and he was thrilled to read it.  It was so kind of you to provide it.  We are truly grateful.  If you see anyone trouncing around the cemetery, reading the gravestones, it's me!

Update:  We are going to Gort today and will try and find the Faunin area.  I wish I had seen the message about the B & B earlier.  That would have been lovely.  Thank you so much, Sister, for your help.  We may stop in the town hall as well.  Does such a thing exist?

I can help with regard to information on Roger Burke. My mother knew the last Roger Burke who died in the 1950s.. He spent his last years in the house where I grew up.
