I'm looking for any information available on the Fitzmartins who came to Champaign County, OH between 1850-1855, all born in Co. Limerick per death certificate information. Mother's name was Ellen, and we believe she was widowed before leaving Ireland, so her husband's name is unknown, but may be Thomas. Ellen was born c. 1800. Her children were:
William, born about 1825, md to Ellen O'Connell in Ohio
James, born about 1826, md to Anna Quinn, daughter of Hugh and Sarah Quinn
Thomas, born about 1827, unmarried
Mary L, born about 1830, md to Thomas Barry of Co. Cork
Ellen, born about 1832, md to James Sheedy of Co. Tipperary
John, born about 1833, md to Eliza Farrell
Johanna, born about 1834, md to Jeremiah Sullivan.
Children all married in Champaign Co., Ohio to the best of my knowledge. Mother Ellen died in Champaign Co, Ohio in 1868.
Any information is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Mary Helen Mccarthy

Hello Helen,
I tried both websites for your family www.rootsireland.ie and ww.irishgenealogy.ie
I looked for the names of your family but came up against a brick wall.
So I just went to rootsireland and put in fitzmartin with mother ellen. I got two hits .
johanna fitzmartin 1834 co. limerick
johanna fitzmartin 1880 co. limerick
I believe the first is yur johanna and it would be very worth your while to view this record €5, as it would give the fathers name and that would be a huge step forward.
Hope this helps somewhat,
regards,
Anne

Thank you very much, Anne! That 1834 record states that the father was Thomas Fitzmartin, and the mother's name was Ellen Vaughan - the baptism was at Feenagh and Kilmeedy. A big step forward for me!

Hello mary helen,
Glad you found your family and have another avenue to explore. Don' t forget to look at www.castlegarden.org to see if any of your fitzmartins travelled together.
It's such an unusual name that hopefully you'll find them.
Regards,
Anne

Thank you - I will do that. It was a fairly large group, so I'm sure at least some of them travelled together. Thanks again for your help!

Mary Helen,
You'll find that on many occasions one member of a family would travel abroad and work for a while to send a fare back home. But maybe the women travelled together?
