My grandmother was from Parish Ballyhaunis. She was baptised Ellen O'Connor on 2 December 1883. Her father was James O'Connor and her mother, Bridget Boyle. My grandmother came to the US and married my grandfather Joseph Ferral in 1915.  My grandmother died in 1945 in Philadelphia,  PA where she was married.

Would like to find out more about my grandmother's family (O'Connor and Boyle), if there were any other children who stayed or left Ireland and if any other living realitives who are my family as well.

Thank you.

As far as I know Ballyhaunis is in the Parish of Annagh.

The only Ellen I could see on the 1901 Census that would be in or around your Ellen's age lived in Main Street, Kiltimagh which is not a million miles from Ballyhaunis but neither is it just a stroll down the road. I could not find a James in the Ballyhaunis area on the Census either so either they didn't live there or were elsewhere on the night of the Census. It's strange that none of them are listed though. In some cases the men may have been out card playing or somesuch that night but you would have thought someone would be recorded in the household.

I may be in the area during the week and I will check if the graveyard in Ballyhaunis has been surveyed and if it has it will have a board inside with the names of all the graves. Any O'connors I find I will write down and let you know.

  • I checked online and there are only 3 graves for O'Connors in Ballyhaunis graveyard but I will go along and check the board for O'Connors/Connors anyway, probably on Friday. If Ellen was baptised in St. Patrick's, Ballyhaunis it is likely her paretns are buried in Ballyhaunis graveyard unless they moved away.

If you look up Roots Ireland  (http://www.rootsireland.ie/) you will will see that there is only 1 marriage cert for a James Connor, a civil cert from 1868 and this could be your James Connor, though it is a bit early if she was born in or around 1883.

If it is correct then James and Bridgets parents should also be recorded. You need to pay a certain amount to accress the actual rcords but it is worth it I think when you know the pre-marriage name of Ellen's mother, in other words you won't be going in blind trying to guess. You can also look up to see if there are any other children born to James and Bridget besides Ellen.

Also you can check the deaths for James and there are 35 matches for a James Connor/O'Connor in Co. Mayo. The first 22 of these can be disregarded as Elleb was born in 1883 I think you said, so you need only concern yourself with the last 13 of them. Again you have to pay a fee to see them and you can make a shortlist of potentials from there.

  • Hi

    Noted your email.

I agree with advises given to you to try www.rootsireland.ie.

However, I have further details for you that may focus you on spending less money!!

    (1) I located a marriage for a James O'Connor and Bridget Boyle in 1868 in the civil district of Ballindine which is close district to Balllyhaunis Civil area.

    (2) I noted that there were at least 6 children registered in the same civil area.

Maria born in 1869, Patrick born in 1870, Margaret born in 1871, Bridget born in 1873, Catherine born in 1875 and Winifred born in 1878.

    (3) Curiously, I then noted that there at least another four children born of the same parentage that were subsequently baptised in the old Annagh parish of Ballyhaunis which bordered the Ballindine Civil area per 1900. (Annagh parish boundaries altered circa 1900). I could not find a civil registry for these children which was a bit unusual in all cases.

Ann born 1881, Ellen born 1883, Patrick born 1885 and Catherine born in 1895!

    (4) The first question you will need to ascertain is to investigate if they are all the children are from the same parentage of same names or whether they are two distinct families?

    (5) The next mystery is that I also could not locate the family unit even with extra details outlined above in the 1901 Irish Census?  Is it possible that they were spilt up or all moved to the USA or indeed UK? If you get address details on the details I have outlined above, it may add more focus to your research. Indeed, I also tried 'Connor' with limited confidence in any of the above been located!

In summary, if you do have to spend some money in locating details, the above information should give you added detail. I would focus on the Annagh parish births for address details and then I may be able to assist you furtrher.

  • It does not appear that the above siblings are from the same family. There is a Patrick and Catherine in both. Going back to the census information. There was indeed an O'Connor family in Ballindine. Head Maurice a Police Sergant. Ballindine is close to the Galway border. If you have birth certs you will know the name of their townland and which side of the border it was on. From the earlier family born 1869 to 1878 It would have been very likely that all of the females would have been married by the 1901 Census. This only leaves Patrick born 1870 to concentrate on. His age for the 1901 census is 31. We can enter his name and age in census search using all counties. Then look for one born in Mayo or Galway. There is one result I see that may well be your Patrick. It is Patrick a RUC Constable in the townland of Mullymucks and dedication of Roscommon. Name per census of 1901 Patrick's O'Connor. He is married to Teresa Gordon and they have issue. If you do not have the original certs of the Ballindine details I would suggest you follow these up. Good luck with your research. It does not appear to be an easy one. It looks like it requires a detective to research one.
