I'm searching for information on James McGowan, arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania US aboard the Barque Creole fron Londonderry 18 July 1850. He was the only McGowan on board. He was born 1832 or 1833. His parents or location in Ireland not found on any records here in the US. He died 19 March 1889.
James married Bridget Conlin or Conlon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania about 1860. Bridget was the daughter of Michael and Ellen, and was born Ireland 18 May 1837. Sponsors of their children include Anna Conlon, Mary Conlon
Their oldest son Patrick born Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania married Elizabeth McNamara. Her parents born Ireland. Her father Daniel McNamara, born 13 June 1836, son of Morton McNamara and Kate. Her mother was Jane Kinzey or McKensey.
Link to my blog about this family-http://rootsbranchesandnuts.blogspot.com/
Any information you can find on any of these families would be much appreciated.

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Unfortunately, it will be difficult to find information without an exact place of origin. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.
In addition McGowan was a popular name in Ireland during the 19th century so this does not help narrow down a place of origin:

There are a few places online you could try searching, however without more information it may be difficult to know whether any results found are relevant to your family:
www.familysearch.org have a huge databse of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland
www.rootsireland.ie have a vast collection of church records available, however you have to pay to use this site.
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ this site will be useful if the family came from Dublin, Kerry, Carlow or Cork. Church records from these areas have been uploaded here free of charge. Please note that only parts of Cork have been covered so far.
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
Irish Times: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/index.htm
I hope that you are able to find some leads. Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Kind regards,
