My great grandfather was Bernard Francis Ginnity. His parents were Bernard Ginnity  (b. 1835) and Sarah Logan (b.1833). Bernard Francis Ginnity emigrated to the US, arriving in Philadelphia ( I think) in 1865. He ended up in Brooklyn, dying there in 1932. I think the family may be from Louth or Meath but I don't have any documentation. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Could the name be McGinnity ? www.rootsireland.ie has a baptism of a Bernard with father Bernard in 1860 county Louth.

  • Hello Anne Marie,

My father told us that his branch of the family dropped the Mc from Ginnity after being disowned for marrying beneath his station. I don't know if this is true or a family myth. He also told us that the family had some horse thieves. Again, who knows.

The Bernard Ginnity born is 1865 was born in Liverpool where Bernard and Sarah Logan were married in 1862. Bernard then emigrated to the US.

The Bernard F Ginnity whose draft card you found was my grandfather. He was registered as pat of the "Old Man's Draft" during WWII. My father, Bernard F., the 4th, also registered and served in the Army in the Pacific Theatre.

Thanks so much for responding. I do appreciate it.

    Regards,

    Marianne
